Getting my new pup soon, hoping when he's big he'll be able to do some long walks and runs with me, but my friend said she wouldn't run more than 5 miles with her dog as she doesn't want to wreck his joints

Would I be putting my dog's joints at risk doing long runs? My main concern was running in hot weather with a double coat (him not me) but do I need to worry about wrecking his joints too?

Getting a Keeshond, spitz type, around collie size, I wanted a slightly bigger dog than my terrier as I want to take it running with me

Just wondered if this was standard advice or if anyone has experience of running causing joint problems

I wouldnt run with a larger breed untill 18months, to allow bones to grow and settle before they under go too much concussion / jarring.

I agree you are best not running a kees until fully mature. As you say I would think the heavy coat might be a problem in very hot weather, that of course is if we ever have any hot weather. I have arranged to have my Cushings pony and donkey clipped today as they have both been too hot over past few days, so of course it is now about 10 degrees colder and pouring with rain.:(
Pics of said pup are of course necessary.

It's the constant impact/jarring of 'forced' running on a hard surface that damages young joints, I agree 12-18 months and a slow and steady build-up.

The AD endurance test requires the dog to trot alongside a bike for 12 miles with two rest stops and a short obedience test at the end, if our slopey-backed cripples can do that :p then I am sure a spitz breed can!!

Thank you, you've put my mind at ease, I wasn't planning on doing much until he's two, as that's what they recommend for agility, but hadn't heard of any older dogs having joint problems from running too far.

Not sure my joints could hack lots of running on hard ground either...

Obvs I will post pics when I get him, squeeeeeeeeee!
