How much exercise should my 12 week labrador puppy be getting?

He's fully vaccinated and has been going out for little walks (about 4 walks of 10 minutes) a day since the weekend. I'm a first time puppy owner - have had dogs before but never one so young - and he's an absolute darling and i'm keen to do everything right

I've read lots of conflicting info the net as i know he shouldn't have too much exercise until he's over 6 months due to his joints etc. Some say only 5 minutes on grass others say up to half an hour on pavements .....

Just wondered if what i'm doing is enough or maybe too much? And how much should i increase it by as he get's older? (sorry, am trying hard not to turn into a panicky first time mum!! lol)
Any help much appreciated

I think what he's having is quite a lot for that age, maybe in a couple of weeks but I would drop it to 5 min's or so for a few more days; I assume he's able to play in the garden at home and isn't shut away anywhere during the day so he should be getting enough exercise for the time being. (That's my personal view, don't expect all to share it!)

Some big dogs, not sure if this includes labs are prone to hip dysplasia. (Do not know much about big dogs only had little JRTs). Things like over exercise and slippery surfaces such as tiles can aid development of hip dysplasia. Other than that i do not know much. I would probably agree with MFH as long as he's allowed to stretch his legs around the house and in the garden.

The rule for puppies is 5 mins per month of his age - so at 3 months - 15mins - more than once a day is ok - just not too much in one go. Then once they fully grown ie. 1 year to 18 months you can do more

Just keep upping by 5mins each time he gets a month older.

Sound like you doing fine to me

thats what i thought aswell

At 12 weeks mine was allowed free run for 15 mins with his mum. It took 5 minutes to get to the field, then I let them run and play and then walked back on the lead. The field was flat with no ruts or surprises. I didn't really up it until 6 months then it was two half hour walks with lots of free running. Now at nearly a year, we can go on hour and a half walk easily.

Why don't you ask the dog's breeder or your vet for their advise. My pup is 1 year old now and I still occasionally ask the breeder for advise on some things.

Exactly what Widget said.

However, lead walk for pups is much harder work for them and you need to make sure you give them breaks. When they are off lead they can give themselves breathers by sitting or laying down, however on leads, they dont get the opportunity............
