We have just got a black lab pup. She is hopefully going to be a gun dog. Could I have some advice on walking her please. My other half says that she hardley needs walking but I think she needs a bit more walking but he says that it will hurt her bones etc? She is 12 weeks old. Trouble is she is like most pups, very lively etc!! How much excersise would you give her? She comes out of the kennel for an hour in the morn including walk. Half an hour at lunch and in the eve she comes out into the garden/ house for 3 or so hours and has a 5 min walk.

At her age is it not about physical exercise its about mental.

Lots of small training sessions and constructed play.

As for physical exercise i think the rule is 10 minutes + 5 minutes per month of life? So 25 minutes of leash walks a day at the most.

Running around on a soft surface off leash ect doesn't count into that 25 minutes.

The most important thing is to not let her jump. No jumping onto the sofa or in and out of the car ect

agree with K_H re exercise.

I have a black lab pup too - and working, as are the rest of ours.

Labs are all about mental stimulation! Although, yes they can go all day etc mental is their 'thing'

Another thing we make sure - no jumping up/down things like hedges, car boots etc etc until around 12 months for the sake of their hips.

Anyway where are the pics?! ;):p:D

p.s maisey is also TERRIBLE for jumping up!! I tell her no and turn my attention...i.e. turn my back. If on a walk she carries on, i tell her 'no' or 'down' and push her away. She does get the hint but i'm sure she has the memory span of a goldfish!!!!!!

Kensa, my other lab is the same with jumping up. Although she is the ONE and ONLY dog neither myself or my dad, or anyone else for that matter has managed to stop!! You can do everything imaginable to try and discourage her and it makes not one bit of difference!

Thanks for your tips!! Feel guilty about telling her off etc cus she is sooooo sweet but if we don't do it now we are setting ourselves up for a fall!! Would love to do pics but havn;t worked it out yet!!

Re the jumping up, turn away, clap your hands, inisist on her sitting, reward her. Is she treat motivated? When she sits, treat. I used to completely ignore the puppies when I walked into the room, walk through them if necessary and they soon learned that they got no attention til they were calm. The new puppies get ignored and left in the cage til they're silent and sitting.
