My Fatty Haffy lives out 24/7 unrugged. During the day he is out with a mare but she goes in at night and he is by himself. He is not fussed about this at all as his field is next to the stable so he can see other horses.

I can only get up to the yard once a day as it is quite far away from me. At the minute he is getting one feed of a small scoop of fast fibre and the a couple of hand fulls of healthy hooves. This has always been a token feed as he was a pig to catch when I first got him and this was his reward for coming in. He also now gets hay put in the field in the evening after the mare is taken out. He has not lost much weight at all so far this winter.

Now the grass has stopped growing he is quite hungry come evening. He cant have hay out during the day as the mare has to have soaked hay. He cant be moved either. The YO's inlaws turn out in the morning and my pony is a bit much for them to bring in to feed, but I could make up a feed for them to give him in his field before the mare goes out.

So between the 2 feeds of fast fibre, how much can/should I feed? I want the morning feed to be of a decent enough size that it puts something in side him until the hay in the afternoon and he feels like he has eaten, but I appreciate trickle feeding is the better option, but not always possible. Ill just point out that we do have grass for him to graze, but not lots of it. He does have food going through his system as a lot is still coming out the other end! Its more that hes a greedy boy who gets grumpy when hes not stuffing himself!

So between 2 feeds, how much fast fibre can I give. Same with the healthy hooves too, i know you are supposed to feed a lot of this for its nutritional value so I am not too worried about that.

Finally, succulents. How many of these to feed? I usually chuck 5 or 6 chopped up carrots in the field in the evenign fo rhim to find as hes grazing. Is this too many? He is partial to a swede to behe can polish one off in an hour so Id like to know your thoughts on how many succulents I can feed a day too, or if you know of an alternative?

Thanks everyone. xx

I think there is a limit I saw somewhere but cant think where but I know its a lot because it can be fed as a total hay replacer. I guess its just that old nutshell of the food is only beneficial up to the size of a rugby ball and then the horse doesnt get the benefit of the rest. I used to do it when my girl was stabled though but she was a trickle feeder and not one of those that gulps every last bit down in a min.
