I'm just wondering how much people pay for their vets to write a prescription as I've just ordered some Nexgard for Freddie and was more than a little shocked at the price, obviously much cheaper online but I need my vet to give me a prescription for them, so just wondering whether next time he needs some I go this route instead?

My vets charge around £20 for prescription, but my god it’s like getting blood out of a stone . Usually takes my vet at least a week and I have to chase them up on it almost daily. I know I’m cynical but I’m sure they do it to put you off buying meds elsewhere.

Thanks, I'm quite sure that's why they do it , but I've just paid £74 for three tablets (3 months supply) and online they seem to be available from about £22 per pack of three!

The prescriptions can take some time to do, and generally they aren’t for urgent medications, so they do slide down the list in terms of urgency. If I only have time to cross 3 things off my list between consults, then it’s the result reporting, call back to worried owner and urgent medication requests that I’ll sort first. Can’t speak for every practice but certainly we don’t purposely delay prescriptions to deter people asking for them.

If someone asks in a consult and I have time to do it while they wait, I will do, but can’t always guarantee that.

I do write a lot of prescriptions, and there are some medications that I always recommend a prescription for because they are expensive drugs generally and any saving is useful - this is only appropriate really for chronic medications or where waiting a few days for delivery is appropriate for the animal

Mine was £20. But she’s wonderful and I am, sadly, a very good customer so I got scripts for Bravecto for all five last year for £20.

€10 if it is for a medication I don't carry/would need to special order. €15 for medications I do carry.

If requested in appointment I will do them time allowing, if not they go on the to do list which is prioritised by urgency. I do have guidelines for all clients to request refills or repeat prescriptions at least 14 days before they run out.

I'm sure my vet is £32 for a prescription
TBF she said if metacam didn't suit she advised to buy onsior online as it's a fraction of the price online. The prescription is for 6 months

When I needed expensive heart medication for a dog my vet charged £20 for the prescription but it was marked for 3 repeats .
It was a lot cheaper than getting it from the vets.
When I chatted about the difference to the vets they said it was because that particular medication they couldn't bulk buy as my dog was the only one at the practice using it.

£27 for a written prescription, no matter what medicine or type of animal. It worked out cost effective for my dog’s expensive heart meds to get the script and order online, but not for my cat’s thyroid meds.

If your animal is on long term medication, the vet should issue a prescription for 6 months worth (so the dosage plus repeats). My vets price match common medications but only if you ask, which makes me feel sorry for people who struggle to find the money but aren't aware, especially pensioners. If they don't price match, it's always cheaper to buy online with a prescription and usually by quite some margin.

Not necessarily. Gabapentin for instance can only be dispensed a month at a time, with rechecks every 3 months (controlled medication). It very much depends on the medication, and the stability/general health of the pet as to how long the prescription will be allowed for - which is one of the things that a vet needs to assess every time a prescription is requested.
As to price matching, I have never heard of this before! We have always had fixed prices (across the whole group for medication). I think this is an exception, but I guess its worth an ask..

I heard of a friend of a friend who gets their prescription for their dog from their vet’s and then uses that one prescription for more than one supplier!

I wasn't referring to controlled medications, but yes, good point. My vets are part of CVS and when I had a conversation with the receptionist about it, she said that the medications they referred to as 'bread and butter' meds were allowed to be price matched, so things like Metacam, bute, prascend etc, that they supply a lot of. She also said it was only when asked for, so if somebody didn't ask, it wasn't offered.

We've sacked a couple of clients over the years for prescription fraud like this- usually we are contacted by an online drugs company for clarification on the original prescription. We had one client that carefully changed the number of repeats. Instant sacking from us, always, and fraud proceedings initiated by drugs company.

It’s not something I have or would ever do, I don’t know the ins and outs but the lady is very elderly and not well off, not that it’s an excuse but I think she’s quite desperate and short of money and is trying her best for an old dog

Hmmm, had a similar experience, cat and thyroid meds. Contacted Cats Protection ( where this puss originally came from), who suggested I report it to RCVS - apparently there is some sort of enquiry into excessive vet charges.
It’s a small animal practice, so rang them to express concerns and relay this info, whereupon the vet provided a year long prescription for FREE.
Guilt?
Quite what happens when those run out, remains to be seen. Cat’s doing fine, tho.

It's still fraud. There are lots of Veterinary supports available for low income households.
