im buying my loan horse but hes going to come naked. how much would i expect to pay for a good second hand saddle, as i am on a bit of a budget?! his saddle now is 17 wide which also confuses me as he is a tb with a high wither and he was bit skinny with no muscle when he came... hes filled out more now! any info much appreciated!!

Well, how long is a piece of string?

Decide on a price you are happy to pay and then trawl ebay, there are tons of saddles on there. You can tailor your search to type, colour and size. If you buy one from ebay make sure you get a saddle fitter out to check it's fit.

Alternatively, get your local saddler to bring a selection within your price range and make sure he knows what your budget is.

It depends in what type you want,
I managed to find my daughter a lovely close contact jumping saddle hardly used good English leather for £190 on eBay was very pleased with my purchase!! Did have to stay up really late to bid on it though!

I've just bought a gorgeous second hand leather saddle for 400 quid but my saddler does them from 200 up. That said my mate got one off eBay for 35 pound - bargain.
Good luck - tack shopping is great fun!

i just wanta nice GP! how do i know what size to look on ebay for? do you think it is 17 wide like he has got now? and then get the saddle fitter to come and check it?

If you're not sure what you're looking for you would be much better getting a fitter out - you'll pay slightly more for a given saddle, but trust me, I see too many people who have spent and lost a fortune on buying and selling saddles before getting me out after finding they can't find anything suitable, or really don't know what they're doing, or both. Cheaper in the long run to cut to the chase and get a good fitter out!

his owner said he was difficult to fit so i guess its not really worth the risk!! im just under a lot of pressure to buy him and kit him out asap :( v stressful!!

I wouldn't go straight to ebay when you don't really know what suits that horse. Has the saddle been checked since you've had him on loan, if not you can't even be sure that is OK especially if as you say he has filled out.

Size varies between makes as well and some come up a bit smaller than others.

Also is 17" the best size for you if it hasn't been fitted to you?

I would get a saddle fitter out who has a selection of new and secondhand saddles. If they don't have anything in your budget they can probably give you an idea on some saddles to look out for secondhand. Then get them back out to tweak the saddle when you find it.

I would expect to pay from a saddle fitter about half of what the saddle would have costed brand new, a bit more than half if it is in very good condition. Some will charge for the fitting some build it into the price.

If his current saddle fits him I'd make an offer for it. Otherwise, unless you know what you're doing / looking for, the best option is a saddler who can both sell you and fit a saddle and that's potentially going to be expensive ... certainly a lot more expensive than ebay!

Measure his current saddle from the button on the skirt to the left or right of the pommel to the centre of the cantle (back). This is the bit that would be 17"

Then measure across the front from D ring to D ring.

Saddles advertised on ebay will usually give this second measurement too, or you could ask for it.

Can you borrow the current saddle until you get your own? Will ease the pressure on you to pay out for a saddle straight after you have bought the horse.

If his owner says he was difficult to fit, then you would probably be better getting a saddle fitter out rather than taking pot luck yourself.

Ah but the beauty of ebay is that fore-armed is fore-warned; if you know roughly how much certain saddles sell for, you are probably going to be able to get yourself a better deal, not necessarily buying from ebay ..

like a copy of autotrader for saddles ;)

his owner says she isnt going to wait for me to have the money ready for the saddle she wants the money for him now. this weekend. i might have to just lunge for a month until i can afford one, its a horrible situation!
