How much for field to be topped?

Does anyone know the average cost please? South west/Bath area, I've got about 6 acres to be topped and have just had a quote, minimum £140, which seems excessive. But maybe that's the going price?

I pay £30 per hour (near Oxford) is that is any help. Some contractors will also charge you for their travel time so doing small amounts of work seems to be relatively more expensive.

Thanks Eggs. They said they would be charging travel time on top of the quote. Hmmm, think I'd better shop around...

Wouldn't a neighbouring farmer do it for you a bit cheaper - all livestock farmers have a suitable tractor and topper.

Contractors do have a lot of overheads, including expensive insurance, but £140 does seem a bit OTT!

If their quoting you that high their taking the piss or their just not that interested in the work. You'd be better off approaching a neighbouring farmer and asking him to do yours when he's doing his own fields.
