How much do you guys pay per bale of woodshavings for your horse's bed? My yard owner has been quoted £8.40 a bale and thinks this is a lot. They are decent shavings but none the less they are getting too expensive and we are looking to change the yard onto something cheaper (already have some on straw but several owners don't like this so need something similar to shavings but less expensive). So also if you don't use shavings for bedding what do you use, how good is it and how much does it cost?

Thankyou

I normally pay 6.90 a bale - when ordering a pallet of 20.

Today I paid £8.25 from Countrywide. I did ask them if they were gold plaited. Bloody ridiculous price.

And as your yard owner will probably be claiming the VAT back on the shavings she sells you - daylight robbery I'd say.

Was using Bedmax which was creeping up to the £8 mark. Changed over to wood pellets in the New Year - works out at £2.50 a bag (equivalent to a bale of shavings). Really pleased with them and the price also means I can use them for both of mine - my mare is v clean and gelding v dirty. Boy was on straw and mare on shavings - mucking out used to take about 30 mins and at least 4 wheelbarrows (3+ from gelding). Now can muck out both in about 10mins and 1 wheelbarrow - won't be using anything else now.

I mis white horse shavings (£7.40) with chopped cardboard (£3.50) and it gives great beds and very easy to keep clean.
I totally agree though shavings are stupid prices..

Cardboard from Ecobed is cheaper than shavings; and if your people would accept treated straw like Nedzbedz that is cheaper too (I've just had 400 bales at £4.35 per bale plus VAT) but he did say I was lucky as it was old stock.

we charge £7.80 for mendip wood shavings and some unbranded ones which is fairly reasonable with the current sittuation of shavings we have had this year.

I'm in South Yorks we get ours straight from the wood yard. They aren't totally dust extracted but aren't overly dusty! I'ts a bargain - our local tack shop charges £6 something for a bale.

We buy in bulk as well!

shavings are £7 at our yard, so now im on straw which i get from a local farmer for £2.20 a bale. there is no way i can afford gold plated shavings atm!

Our shavings hit £8 a sack. Didnt matter which brand and you couldnt get Hunters for love or money so I changed over to wood pellets at £4 a bag.

Where do you get your wood pelletts from??

£7 a bale of shavings. No way am i paying that next year for it to be thrown on the dung heap a few days later, it's just madness. I am going on to straw for my 2 next winter. I was thinking about the wood pellet option, my mare is really mucky, just wondering if this is a possible solution. There are ones up here called 'stovies'. Just wondered if anyone has used them?

I changed to pellets at New Year - my boy is minging - 3 to 4 barrows a day on straw and at least 30 mins to muck out. On pellets takes 10 mins max to muck out and 1 barrow max!! At £2.50 a bag its so much cheaper, and with 2 horses, quicker.

Do a quick search (especially in Stable Yard) under wood pellets, Liverpool Wood Pellets or LWP. You should get all the answers you need (inc piccys) thats how I changed on to them.

PM me if you want to ask anything.
