I'm trying to work out what's going to be most cost/time efficient. I need a horse bringing down from Kelso to Hurstpierpoint (7hr trip each way).

I've been in touch with a few transport companies that have all come back with quotes of upwards of £1000 for a single load. Fair enough, it's a long journey but still a lot of money.

I have been in touch with a couple of the bigger transport companies that do shared loads, but they haven't got back to me yet.

Does anyone know what I might expect to pay for a 400 mile trip on a shared load? Just trying to weigh up whether it would be more cost effective than the fuel I would use going there and back myself, plus paying someone to do the ponies, and I think I would probably have to stop somewhere overnight aswell as would be a 15hr round trip in total.

ETA: The cost for staying overnight would be x2 aswell as I would take my mum with me. Too scared to do all that motorway driving on my own 🙈

Heck of a lot easier and less stressful to get someone else to transport it.

I'd use Gillies, are they one you've contacted?

Yes, one of them. They rang me earlier but I didn't quite get to the phone in time and then they were closed when I rang back later. I will call them again in the morning and see what they say.

It may be a moot point now unfortunately as just been sent a message to say horse is now lame 😫

Gillies are on the spot in Kelso (if horse becomes sound).
In 2018 it cost me 350 with them to get B from Thurso to NW Surrey. (A lot further up!)
This time last year I had a temp visitor from same place and a Gillie shared load was about 500 all in.
They usually all go to Gillie towers and then start their trip 1st thing Mondsy morning, usually a Surrey delivery would be late Tuesday, depending on stops, so Sussex might be late Tues or on a Weds.

Each time it actually works out more cheap to use them , saves me a 12++hr each way trip, 2 to 3 days away unless I get a 2nd driver with me, saves me paying for yard cover at home, saves time off work, saves me fuel and wear and tear. (Diesel alone - from my yard to do round trip to Thurso and back - would be around £200)

Hope you get sorted if horse comes right.

£1000 sounds expensive even though prices have gone up. Gillies probably the best especially if from Kelso. You may have to be flexible re timing if a shared load, they brought one up for me last summer for a very reasonable price.
