So basically the title how much would you pay for used rugs? Going on the basis that they are clean, re proofed if turnouts and any repairs done? Think I have priced mine too high and wanted to get some opinions. Will leave my pricing unknown for now.

Brand wise it's a mix, amigo shires rhino I think weatherbeeta etc. Mainly turnouts but a few stable mix of weights from 0g to 400g.

Thanks :)

Bought some off a friend last winter, washed, reproofed and in good condition, paid her £25 per rug, but she was desperate to get shot of them as she had way too many and nowhere to store them!

I'd say it's pretty impossible to say without knowing the actual rug. I've just sold a Weatherbeeta freestyle washed and proofed but oldish for £50
It also depends a lot on time of year etc

Having been shopping around for used rugs, it is really impossible to generalise. I got a stable rug in fab condition from eBay for £3.20!

Fair enough. Managed to get onto my laptop finally so got the list of rugs:

200g stable rug by rhinegold - 6'9
200g turnout combo by weatherbeeta - 6'9
lightweight turnout by amigo - 6'9
400g stable rug by Shires - 6'6
cooler rug by weatherbeeta - 6'6

Thought I had more turnouts than that haha.

I bought a 6ft3 weathebeeta for a 5er at beeston the other day and a 6ft Rhino the same price. They were going up to 48 in the previous sale though

Stable rugs are going out of fashion but I find that heavyweights tend to sell ok so the 400g will be worth more than the Rhinegold, the Rhinegold would be worth about £15-20 I guess - they are not a desirable brand you may have more luck if you say its an ideal rug liner (if its a standard neck rug). The heavyweight is probably worth around the £20 mark poss as much as £30 but postage will bump the price up greatly and heavyweight Shires stable rugs have been seen very recently cheap in the sales under £40

market the cooler rug as an under rug at this time of year and say its good for layering, depending on the type it could be worth anywhere from £8-20 - people are very funny about coolers and an attractive or desirable colour will far outsell a plainer colour in a better fabric

The turnout rugs will be the better sellers, if the Amigo is roomy then market it as ideal as an 'outer' over a stable or under rugs (perhaps say the Rhinegold is ideal for under it - only if it would be obviously) if its a standard neck you'll struggle to get more than £25 unless its in very good condition, I saw one sell recently for about the £15 mark

The Weatherbeeta turnout is the best of the bunch, depending on the type and condition you see these sell usually anywhere between £25 and £60

Try to sell the rugs as collection only as postage can bump the price up beyond what people want to spend, I just sold a heavy liner rug and got £25 for it including postage of £5 but the postage actually costs £8 but if I were to say £28 in total it wouldn't have sold as easily

Consider keeping the lightweight and cooler till spring if you find them hard to sell now, if you arent in a hurry then be wise about when you advertise things, I kept the liner rug for the summer then put the advert up at the first cold snap and so your heavyweight should sell pretty much straight away now. Next time they forecast showers and wind thats when to advertise the lightweight turnout - be clever if you want to hold out for the highest achievable prices

I got a brand new heavy weight rhinegold for 20 and a second hand (dirty) one for a fiver at a boot sale.

Really unless it's a Rambo I don't think they are worth much second hand and you'll not make much more for washed and reproofed either.

Cheers everyone, definitely over priced them then. Overpriced the stable ones for sure but they'd barely been used (maybe once each) so I put them up too high. Cooler I might even keep for now to cool him down after a ride until I can get a bigger one next year (really he needs a 7'0 one). It will fit, but doesnt cover his bum at all lol.

Will put up some posters at the local yards if they allow it although most around here prefer to get rambo for their horses. I refuse to pay for rambo incase my horse destroys it lol

depends on rug but regardless of make be realistic... i enquired about a premier equine storm beater which was advertised at 60 pound ... they sent pm it was in need of repair to all neck straps no tail straps ... i declined ... if you need a quick sale be realistic on price if it needs repairs etc then reflect this in price

Recent acquisitions I have bought in the last year or two;

6'3 Rambo supreme MW turnout, washed, reproofed and no repairs or damage £20
5'6 Snuggy hoods jams body, washed and no repairs £20
5'6 Weatherbeeta Taka combo heavyweight, washed and reproofed £10
6'6 Weatherbeeta Windjammer 450 stable washed £30
6'6 Weatherbeeta Taka heavy standard washed and reproofed £30

I think some are huge bargains and others are fair acquisitions.

On the flipside,

I sold a 5 month old LW Rhinegold with two small nicks for £15 with loads of interest.
I have a 6'6 Amigo Mio with a small rip for £15 with no interest
And I tried to sell a Rambo velour show rug for ages and only got £20 in the end.

I have a bit of a rug collecting habit, and when I lost my big chap a couple of years ago and the new horse was 2 sizes smaller found myself with a huge stock of professionally cleaned/reproofed rugs to sell, all good quality (horseware, bucas etc.) and most in as new condition. I found I was generally able to get 50% of new price for them. Tbh I probably wouldn't pay much more than that for secondhand, otherwise you might as well buy new, especially with a lot of the sales and offers available.

I'm finding second hand rugs to have very little value now. I've seen new ones for sale on facebook for less than £30 for a full neck turnout rug with filling. Recently I sold a heavy fleece rug, used for one winter then washed at home for £10, which I was happy with because I'd bought it in the sale for £20 (RRP £40) and the lady who bought it was happy with her bargain. I had it for sale for a year though. I've sold a cotton rug for £15 including postage to someone who was desperate for a rug, think I'd used that one for 2yrs and got it in the sale originally so again I was happy. The last was a cheap brand turnout rug with filling, which I'd been given years ago but never used. It was scrubbed with a hose and broom at home, no repairs needed, threw in a neck cover and advertised for £25, that sold within 2 days.

My experience and that of people I know, is that nothing is bought/sold for more than about £20-£30 at most and that's for clean rugs in perfect condition. In my area rugs needing repair or having been repaired don't sell at all and didrty rugs go for around £5 regardless of brand. I can understand it. The last 2yrs I've bought full neck Shires and Weatherbeeta turnouts with filling in the sales for £50.

It depends not just on the brand but also the model within the brand - if you look at say Weatherbeeta a new mw turnout in their latest comfitec range goes from £60 to £160 depending on whether you go for budget or top of the range. In old terms a Genero will fetch a lot less than a freestyle.

I've sold turnouts for £50 or a bit more but they were top of the range models that would cost well over £100 to buy new and in good condition i.e no repairs beyond maybe replaced legs straps etc. I usually look at what the same sort of rug goes for new in the sales and start with about 50%

A lot depends on the rug of course, I've just bought a Weatherbeeta pony Freestyle for £50 but no one would ever get that for a used Weatherbeeta Original or Genero

The type of buyers you need for good quality rugs are the sort that are dithering about buying one new, the Weatherbeeta I bought is around £130 new so to me the £50 price tag was a bargain where to someone else it wouldn't be

And the sort (like me) that like specific brands (for fit) and the more expensive models but don't want to necessarily shell out the prices these are new even in a sale.
