Probably applicable to yard owners or those with multiple horses. Looking to do freelance work for 6-8 months. Don't want to overcharge, but also want to be appreciated for cold early mornings reliably shovelling poo!

South East based. Aiming for (and been offered) long mornings eg 5 or 6 hours. Could do afternoons sometimes but split shifts are awkward. Some exercise/lungeing. I've got my BH Stage 1 and fairly experienced. Could plait/clip although a bit rusty. Insured. Own transport needed to these yards, up to 30 mins away but normally closer. Mostly "nice" full/part livery yards.

Would like a £15/hr, wondering if I could charge a little more yard dependant, but then am aware a lot of people also seem to charge/be offered less. Would a small uplift Saturday/Sunday rate seem unreasonable? Obviously horses are 7 days a week but I still end up missing friend and family time and my own competing by not doing Monday- Friday.

Thanks for any honest replies

I know freelance grooms in SE that get £15 or more an hour. And some a bit less. Either only working Monday to Friday or charging more for weekends and public holidays seems reasonable. Most livery yards seem to struggle for weekend workers. But also many livery yards pay minimum wage. Generally I think private yards / private owners will pay freelancers more.

Our yard pays £15 an hour for freelancers, we are over near the Welsh border though so I’d say probably cheaper than the south east. Any less and they just don’t get quality people! To be honest nobody lasts long they seem to come and go because of their own commitments regardless of the pay!
