Out of interest how many slices of small bale hay are you feeding a sec A? Mine is about ideal weight but is going on hunger strike with some new hay and i wonder if he is having all he actually needs

i know bales are different weights but just as a rough guide.....

My welsh a is getting a medium sized haynet stuffed can't say how many slices as I use round bales, would guess 2-3 though :) she's underweight at the moment though not your typical welshie, she likes to pretend she's a tb ;)

Going by a weight of 250k (which should be about right) you would be looking at 5k of hay per day, from our bales that would be 2.5 sections as ours weigh in at 22.5k. Hope that makes sense!

Sorry, that should have been 5k of forage/fibre so would adjust if they were getting anything additional.

Thanks i have 2 of the little bundles of fun and they are probably getting through 4 slices between them in a 24 hour period (turned out in a school at the moment as had a lami scare last week with one of them).

Anyone else?

Ours used to get about 1.5-2 slices at night and went out in the day on a muddy field with not much grass. She wasn't fat and was working at weekends.

LOL, we have 3, I am a complete convert! If you have had a lami scare I would be tempted to cut it down slightly (if they can afford to drop a little weight). I am a firm believer in allowing mine, especially the ponies, to lose a little condition over winter to reduce the risk of lami in spring, since thinking this way we haven't had a single case despite them being turned out on good grass and having 3 (not the A's) that have have suffered from it before. It takes the pressure off with summer weight control a little too.
