Your horses in the winter: Last year my mare was on ad lib haylage as we don`t have hay at our yard. But she got to fat so this year l am weighing her haylage and dividing it out throught the day as we have restricted grazing in winter.

I put it into double haynets as she is a Miss Piggy and will gobble it up :) she also has oat straw to bulk it out and l am going to buy some hay so l can soaked so there is no calories. So what l want to know is how much in pounds would you feed a 15.2 in forage please. She is at her perfect weight of 460.

She has a dinner of fast and fibre, so what l want to know how much forage do you feed your horse/pony. Thank you :)

About 8kgs for a fatty of that size. Double netting is a good idea, as are small hole haylage nets.

Soaking will also reduce the calorific value of the hay. Of course it depends on the quality of the hay this year, if it was long and stalky (i.e. late cut due to rain) it'll have less value than normal.
