I will be getting a 14.2hh connie mare and i'm considering putting her in livery at the local yard. She will be out during the day, but in at night. She's unclipped as well. So how much hay should she be eating overnight? I'm guessing half a small bale overnight but really not too sure! I'm trying to work out how much i should budget for hay!

It's hard to guage not knowing the pony, but I would have said about 1/3 of a small bale a day (at night) should be enough if she's in good condition going into winter. Mind you, small bales do vary in weight. But about 7-8kg of hay per day should be fine. Perhaps get a small spring balance weigher to weigh out her hay in a hay net?

Also, if your not sure it's been done recently it might also be worth having your vet checking her teeth as soon as you get her. Just to ensure there's nothing to prevent her getting as much as she can out of her forage consumption.

sounds about right, if she gets a bucket feed with a large amount of chaff then she will probably eat less hay , especially if there is grass abvailable. l would say 3 or 4 leaves of small bale hay per night should be ok. Allow for 3and half bales a week and you should be ok. How exciting, a new pony, I do like connies, do tell us more about her.

I dont really knoe too much about her! My friend asked me to take her as she being bullied where she is now and i'm in the market for a horse! She's living out, unclipped and barefoot. She hasnt done too much (which could mean anything!) and is 10. She's really pretty apparently! I trust this mate 10000000% in the fact she's not sending me a nutjob as she knows my health can be somewhat precarious! I just want something to potter round on, which she does!
