I’m starting to look for my next horse.
I only hack out but I ride up to 3 hours and if the ground conditions are good it’s at a brisk pace.
Horse must be 100% in wide open spaces in company and alone.
I’m no spring chicken and I want something easy. Not necessarily a dobbin but something that is safe. With the market being up and down I’m not sure what budget I need to look at?
Thanks for any responses.

3hrs hacking at speed makes me think of endurance and Arab types- would be good on terrain too….but many types that would do that job. No idea on price, but it’s the ‘safe’ part of your request that’ll command the money.

If you like hacking, I'd go for an Icelandic. They're expensive in this country (or rather, they're hard to come by, making the prices go up) but many are importing them from Iceland or Denmark.

I'm buying a pregnant mare direct from the breeder in Denmark for just over £5000. Import and transport costs will be around £2000.

Icelandics are tough, brave, forward going and sensible. They're also very comfortable to ride, and have great temperaments (I'm being general, of course). As for size, you can get some around 14.2, but in general they're pony sized. They can carry good sized adults, though. The one I'm getting is 14h.

A beautiful, 7yo 16.2hh bay gelding version of what you want is going to cost £££. But a 12yo 14.2 x breed pony mare will be a lot cheaper! 10k should get you something in the middle 😊

Something nice, I’d want £10k in the bank to play with. If your budget is small, and you can dip into pony size if chunky? Something that dislikes children but is completely safe for an adult will often be very inexpensive.

Safe and sound enough to hack at three hours at speed and in the sweet spot age wise I would say 8k upward.
