I am looking for a new pony after loosing Homey.

I am completely out of the loop in terms what is a reasonable price in today's market. This is Homey's advert from when he was a 5 year old. He was a nice stamp of a new forest smart enough to take to a county show but not a HOYs pony, he hacked alone and in company and good in traffic when I bought him. Had been shown a lot at in hand as a stallion and very comfortable on a show ground. Flew threw a 5 stage vetting with no issues.

What would I be expecting to pay for this sort of pony now if I could find one. I paid £3150 for him 15 years ago.

My NF (with both Peveril Peterborough and Peveril Peter Piper as grandsires, so similar bloodline to Homey on one side) was 7k last August. He’s 10 and done dressage and started jumping. Six years previously I paid 3.5k for a 14 year BSJA/PC pony for my daughter who was talented and a school mistress. Similar ponies to her are now 10k plus. I think you’d be looking at 7k as a starting point. I did wonder if I’d overpaid when I bought my forester and prices would suddenly drop (recession looming etc) but prices have stayed about the same. He was too good to miss, been beautifully brought on and for once, was a horse who matched his advert unlike so many we viewed before. But 7k and upwards does seem the norm now and I am not sure we’ll see the 3.5k ponies again. In 1984 I was bought my first forester for £350…..

Yes, my Super star NF mare was £250.00 as an unbroken 4yr old at about the same time. My friend bought a really big strong 6 yr old at that time for £600.00 Both these ponies lived long and useful lives, working well with no soundness problems. Those were the days!!

I doubt we will see the 3.5k ponies again either unless they are unbacked youngsters or projects.

But good to have a rough idea of what I would expect to pay.

The problem being the more experienced ponies rarely come up for sale now it seems so it doesn't matter what your budget is.

I suppose it is a matter of supply and demand. Lots of people with the money to pay for an experienced pony or people not selling them drives up the prices of youngsters.

I don't think the cost of living has hit people on the higher salaries at all. Plenty of wealthy people around.

Depends where you are located, come up to Scotland and I bet you could find around this figure. I just looked on horsemart for scotland and theres lots of ponies for this sort of figure. I cant believe the rise in prices down south, £7k-£8k for a bog standard pony?
