how much is a decent body protector?

Racesafe, think they're about £120 but they are very comfortable and so many different sizing options!

love my rodney powell - black or navy is around the £90 mark i think, or around £25 more if you want it in your own colours. (or even cheaper if you can fit into the kids sizes) would highly reccomend :D after to talking to someone well in the know about BP's i would personally steer clear of the racesafes, as the spine protection is awful - the whole BP has a seam down the centre at the back, making it significantly weaker than say the rodney powell (which has added spine protection as an option).. everyone raves about the Kan too which sound and looks great, but if your on a budget, then a RP would be much cheaper :)

Go for a RaceSafe - between £120-£160 dependent on if you need it custom made for size and colour. I adore mine - it's the only body protector I've ever owned that I actually wear because I want to, not because I have to!

I paid £133 for my rodney powell, in my XC colours with shoulder pads and a matching silk. I love it, but that is all I have ever had so I might not be qualified to comment! Did try on an Airowear outlyne and I thought although it wass soft, I didn't like it because I felt it was too soft and it didn't feel like it was protecting me IYSWIM?

I work in a saddlery and do alot of fittings. The Racesafe and Rodney Powells are definately the most popular. As mentioned above, the Racesafe comes in various back lengths and the RP is also available in different widths, they can also be made to measure in various colours. They range from £100 - £150ish. One more thing, please make sure you have one fitted by someone who is qualified rather than getting one off the internet! A poorly fitted BP (or riding hat), can be worse than having no protection at all!!

thanks guys i am going to resurrect this as i have sorted my budget at 100-150 and wanted to add i have quite a bad/ sensitive back wondering if this makes any difference also where is best to go seeing as i am new to the north of scotland not sure where the best saddlerys are etc.
:o

I hated my RP. It was so stiff! Felt horrible to ride in, I used to rip it off as soon as I'd finished going xc. I would seriously think about saving some extra money and getting a KanTeq. I've only had mine for a couple of weeks and only actually been xc in it once, but when I got back from xc and mum asked me "how did your bp feel?" and I realised I was still wearing it 20 minutes after I'd finished, and I could only answer "I don't know, I forgot all about it!", it was so comfy I totally forgot I had it on! Also found that I had come back from xc not out of breath at all, because I had been able to breath so much easier in it.

Agree with the above comment, if you have any back issues at all then invest in a Kanteq, there are in my opinion the best on the market. I am a bit of a crock myself and would'nt wear anything else!

right so its between a racesafe and a kanteq i know theres massive difference in price but OH has offered to go halves after watching baby horse take off the other day i think he thinks i need one :P so i think i am going to have to try them on and see does anyone know whether the kanteq lady would be at blair?

Wendy will be at Blair this year :) I would absolutely recommend a kanteq, they are more expensive but I had a truly hideous fall in mine about two months ago, the doctors ended up ultrasounding me twice because they couldn't believe I would have no internal bleeding! Really comfy, don't be put off by the weight when you hold them, you don't notice it when it's on, really is more like wearing a gilet I think rather than a bp :)

Yes full list of events here. Though a friend recently ordered hers by phone with all her measurements and is very pleased with the fit :).

Honestly, my Kan is the comfy item of 'safety' wear I own! After XC I can see the horse without even noticing I'm still in, I can breath and move so easily in it, and have even mucked out in it without noticing I was still wearing it!
Well worth the expense IMO!
