To get a colt cut?

Just wondering out of interest an average sort of price, i've asked 2 people and both answers are completly different!!

So i think one person may not be telling the truth! lol

One friend has just paid £60 and one paid £100 when she had hers done - both live within about 2 miles of each other but use different vets. Just goes to show that not all practices charge the same! The vet who recently did the one for £60 charged different amounts depending on the size of the colt though, and charged the £60 for a roughly 15.2hh horse.

Here is my bill: (my vet is quite expensive though)

Local visit......................................£23.88
Castrate colt (no inc drugs)............£108.87
Domosedan..................................£5.70
Torgbugesic inj.............................£4.81
Depocillin.....................................£2.24
Flunixin inj....................................£2.52
Lignocaine/Adrenaline inj................£2.00
Surgical gloves 2 pairs...................£2.16
Total cost with VAT = ...................................£178.81

I would've thought a pair of bricks would have been the cheaper option though

Edited to say: this was for my 1 year old colt who stood about 13.2hh if I can remember rightly.

I've just been reading your post on 'should I buy him' and wondered if you did - then I realised I had replied to this. So does this mean you are buying him?? he is lovely!

Crikey Lucyfer you paid a LOT! I've just phoned my friend to check I had it right & she did pay £60 but it was a discounted rate as the vet did 2 whilst he was there. If he had just cut the one it would have been closer to £100.

Tell me about it!

Before I knew what the price was going to be I assumed it was going to be around £200 for such a delicate 'operation', so £180 was close enough. My friend who has a load done at a time pays £100 each if there is a few to be done or otherwise its £150 each.

she would be very correct if she was down here my friend had hers castrated and it wasn't much off £400 and that was 2 yrs ago i would hate the think what it would be now. (that was standing)

£181.77 last May, this was standing and our call out was a bit more. He was about 14.2 at the time, our vet took the bits away and we didn't get charged for any gloves.

We are Norfolk if that's any help.

It depends on size of horse usually and whether you get it done standing or knocked down - afr more expenisve knocked.
Check he has both testicles dropped before you buy though - or else you culd be looking at £400-£700!!

Is it still legal to cut them at the yard, or do they have to go to the vet's? I ask because I thought they could be cut at home (as it were), but someone told me that it's no longer allowed.

Bit of a price variation going on there! The bricks are sounding better and better lol

Put your hand between his legs and feel them!

:P If you cant feel two then he may have ne retained - do warm your hands first though or he may pull them up a bit maing it more difficult to feel.
Its certainly something you cn do yourself - many people get the vet to do it because of the danger factor!! :P

MrsMozart - all the clinics I know still do them out on calls, however mybe you are thinking of knock down castrations? The restrictions on transport of ketamine probably limit this to being done within the clinic - not that it isnt ever done on call-outs!

No, you can do it standing at home. I had a 7yr old stallion done last year and he cost me about £600, but it was expensive as he got an infection. Otherwise it should be about £100. Bets thing to do is get in touch with any local breeders who are getting a bunch done and chip in with them and take him to theirs to get done. its ay cheaper that way!
