How much is meat money?

I sold a horse to a dealer about 6 months ago and she emailed me this morning to say that she hasn't sold him. She said she was sending him to a local horse sales ring, where she hopes to get £1200 to £1500 for him.

I am panicking now as I don't want this horse to be sold for meat! How much is meat money?

This horse is 16h, chestnut gelding, good allrounder, fantastic hunter but cannot be kept with sheep.

Dont worry, meat money is maximum £400 for a decent sized horse. For anyone to make money on buying a horse for meat they'd have to be paying about £250-300 max

Why do you want to know what meat money is fetching? Are you going to offer that for him to get him back?

the going rate for meat at the moment is about 75p per kilo bodyweight

Thanks everyone. I was worried he would be sold for meat money, but I realise now that 1500 is not meat money, so that's ok.

Yes, I was going to try and buy him back if I thought he'd end up somewhere like that.

He used to be the huntsmasters horse, so he is a lovely hunter. Bit reluctant to post his details here, as I don't want to be seen to be advertising. PM me if you'd like to know more though.

You could ring Turners and ask. it used to be 65p a kilo, which means a TB is about £300 - £400

Chocolate Log - I don't know why he hasn't sold. I do know that the dealer's son died a few weeks ago and she wants to not have horses to 'do' over this winter, so her unsold horses are off to a sale next week.

Very sad really, the horse is lovely to ride but I guess he does have a few hangups in that he cannot be turned out with sheep. He can get a bit strong hunting and I think that puts people off, and he is 12. (mind you, his price does reflect his age) Having said that they only use a snaffle for hunting, and I would use something stronger.

I am glad that he's not going for meat money, as I would have tried to scrape every penny together and try and buy him back I think, and sell my sheep instead, as they can't live toghether.

How many horses are turned out with sheep? Surely this shouldn't detract from his value?
