This is for insurance purposes. I would NEVER sell him as I feel I owe him that much due to what he's been through.

Right, so "specs":

> 15.2 Brown gelding.
> 16 years old
> Fantastic breeding (Cor de la Bryere grandsire, although not that helpful now, being a gelding!)
> Good BSJA winnings when I bought him as a 7 year old (£280not, £300andsomething actual) - not done much since for various reasons
> Does go XC although could do with some work in water
> Does a lovely dressage test and always gets 7s & 8s for his paces
> Fantastic hacking in company, nervous alone.
> Snaffle mouthed
> Perfect stable manners, 100% box, clip, shoe, hose etc and very cuddly
> Slightly dubious health issues - only has one kidney as one was removed 6 years ago. Does not affect him now and has had very mild sarcoids on his sheath and chest since we bought him that have always been there and haven't changed/moved/grown or anything

I've got him insured for vets bills and death/loss of horse (NOT loss of use) and am trying to figure out if I should reduce his "value" per the policy to bring the premium down.

Thanks all you clever people!

To be honest I haven't a clue what he's worth but if you only really want vet cover & some third party liability then just have him insured for a small amount i.e. £2-3k. One of my horses is quite valuable but I'm not bothered about death cover really, I just want him covered for vet treatment so I have his value at £3k. I know of several professionals who do the same. I hope this helps. :)

I think im right in thinking when my mum renewed our horses insurance (she was 16) they wouldnt insure her for any more than £2000 so tired to go with another company and they wouldnt insure her for over £750 because she was an "older" horse :(

Thanks for your reply TZ- he's currently on there at £3k but the thing is, if you take the loss of animal off totally, it cuts the premium by about £200!! if I dropped him down to £2k, then it would cut it by about £80. It all adds up.

Any other suggestions?

Seem to have reduced the value of my horse each year to try and make the premium a bit more acceptable. One thing you could look at is what is covered on your household insurance. Only just dscovered this year that that would cover him for public liability.
