I've been advised to hold on to what we can for now.....Local feed merchants here are min £4.50 at the moment. Been advised we should be able to get £4 a bale for ours later in the year - bonus when we paid £1 a bale to get it cut!
Just paid £3.20 per bale from local farmer. Feed merchant he supplies is selling same hay for £4.20. Its quite a jump from £2.oo per bale last year. Have heard it is a good year for hay this year, with high yields so not happy to pay much more!
Our yield was massive, but of course, we were able to leave it til now to cut, and the late hay suits the ponies - it's effectively organic (not cert) so we normally charge a wee bit over the odds, but we've heard it's going to be scarce, and there's going to be tons - hence can't decide whether to sell or hang on! We had considered keeping more and buying in some store lambs, especially to put them over the aftermath, which is consderable .. but ... erm ... can't do that now obviously
article in main page of HH states prices up to 6 quid a bale for top quality and that hay is being imported from Canada this year - when UK is usually a net exporter of hay
if you have more than you will use then keep it to sell next spring and make a profit
I think what happenned round here at leastwas that those of us who were lucky enough to cut in that one hot week we had - first week aug - have got a high yield (50% more than usual for us!) and a nice crop....howvere if you tried to cut early/later in aug until last couple of weeks, crops have been ruined. Know I wouldn't buy off our next door farmer this year as his will DEFINATELY be cr@ppy, as it rained loads while it was 'drying'!
Just paid £3 per bale for some lovely stuff, but now YO has said we have to buy his, he threw a total hissy fit that we had brought some in (despite the fact we have been doing so for last two year - when he ran out in January!!!). So mega pissed off as unless I can manage to have a quiet word with him, will be stuck buying his, weedy, rain on hay that will almost definately run out before next years cut, when I run out of what I have already got.
Always get my hay from local farmer. He's always charged me £2.50 a bay - having to pay £4.00 a bale this year. Say's he lost a lot of acreage because of weather this year!! Most likely just seen a opportunity for immense profit (I'd do the same)- but I need the hay and I knows he's reputable as we have a lot of ragwort in this area!
Our YO gets our hay in for us so we do pay a bit extra for them getting it in and stacking it for us, paying £4 a bale. The hay isn't dusty but it's quite green and the stems are really thick and stiff, don't know if this is good or not but George seems happy with it.
