How much is your farrier?

mine charges £65 for a full set of shoes, and on the odd occasion she has lost a shoe(I think 3 times in 12 years) he doesn't charge anything. when my horse had an abscess and I was on crutches, he came out for 3 days running to put a poultice on for me and wouldn't take any money. he is ace!!!!!!!

Yep, I get that's it's all about supply and demand, I'm fairly lucky that in my area we have a fair few, so they have some competition to keep their prices down. And also lucky that my farrier will work weekends occasionally, although I always have him out midweek.

Still £38 for a lost shoe definitely made me croak. Especially as mine replaces them for free. I know I'm lucky with this. My mare is good with shoes and she's only lost one since I've had her, but my old boy was an absolute pain in the bum!

I have to admit £38 made even me balk, but from that price I think I can guess the farrier and it isn't surprising. Mine does a shoe for 5-10 depending on how far out of his way he's come if I have the shoe, and £20 if not - I WISH he'd do it for free as my guy went through a stage of throwing shoes and I had him out once a week for six weeks between shoeings... my bill was sky high!!

I pay £35 for fronts, road nails and check and tidy up backs - I can't remember when the backs last needed trimming/rebalancing but farrier will always check them to make sure nothing bad going on and sometimes does a little rasp to tidy them up.

We have loads of farriers in the area though so very competitive.

Well this will make you all feel much better about how much you pay.

Our farrier charges between £95-£110 depending on how many in call out and how long it takes him.

He's affiliated with the yard so we have to use him- saying that he is good. But it's still eye-wateringly expensive. He's works 6 days a week and his books are now full, so we obviously aren't the only ones willing to pay those prices!

£20 a trim. Lovely, calm chap with my youngster and he will come out at weekends and not charge extra :)

I paid £75 for a full set, then £47 for fronts and a back trim and now just £20 for a trim every 6 weeks. He's about the same as everyone else in Kent, but he's ALWAYS on time or rings me to say he'll be early, does a great job and was the one that suggested I take his backs off and then his fronts 18 months ago. I love my farrier and sing his praises whenever I can. Lovely calm gent that is also very proffessional and when my friends horse had problems she wanted him to sort out he was sensible enough to say she needed a vet not a farrier. She got another farrier out instead that butchered the horses frogs and left him hopping lame as "it needed to be cut right back".

I'm in the wrong job...

Pony came in with loose and twisted shoe yesterday, half an hour before we were supposed to box off to go cross country. Farrier came within ten minutes (!!!), new shoe, didn't charge us and we were there on time. So so pleased, he is the best!
