I have on livery a 2yrs coming up 3yrs welsh D who needs limited grazing next year. I was wondering how much to fence off for him so that he has enough to exercise but not so much that he gorges himself, he's a good doer and gets a bit full of himself on too much lush grass.

Thankyou.

I had my lad on half an acre of mainly dock, buttercups and grass from March through to September and he still got laminitis even though he was hacked 6 days a week too. I am on clay so this area does get a bit muddy in winter but I will be giving him less than that next year throughout the spring and autumn to keep him in check now he has lost loads of weight.

It totally depends on the quality, type and quantity of grass. And the weather, which will affect grass growth.

You are safer to feed hay and be in a smaller paddock than make the area too large. It is useful to look at the grass growth on the other side of the fence to where the horse is to get an idea of how much the horse is eating. Keep the grass as short as possible, if the horse has to work hard to get it then you can have a bigger area.
