How much money did you spend getting your mare in foal ?

that's why you breed 'em instead of riding them - still addicted to horses but can't risk the plonk when you hit the deck so in my case when the ole TB nag has to hang up his shoes I'll hang up my hat and just breed the beggars instead

Good point airedale!

This is my boy's first season, but luckily I can be VERY confident of his fertility - the results of his semen-evaluation tests at Twemlows were all excellent, showing exceptionally high-quality semen that freezes, chills, etc. perfectly.

His first 4 mares are in foal, and I've just heard from a big stud in Belgium who are breeding 3 mares to him using frozen semen - apparently they checked some of his sperm that had been left under the microscope and they were all still hooning around energetically over 8 hours after defrosting.

But however fertile the stallion, a mare can still slip or lose her foal later in the pregnancy, or through complications during foaling. OK, this is not the stallion's fault or the stallion owner's responsibility. But my feeling is that losing the foal is disappointing enough for the poor mare owner, without having a financial loss as well.

So basically I am doing LFG as a matter of principle, and I do agree with Panther that more stallion owners should offer LFG.

bloody hell airedale... you make me laugh!!!

same here don't bounce well... but I always get sent the difficult ones.. if I feel too dangerous for my daughter I'm on again! trouble is I feel and walk like john wayne when i get off now!! not a good look! especially for a woman!! lol!

Hi everyone
I think I may have given the wrong impression here. I was just wondering how everyone feels about the cost. I am not trying to bred a cheap foal and would never use something with a dogey temperment/confirmation because it was cheap!. We have bred a number of foals in the past and found it easier in that I had and IDXmare which was suited to a TB or trakehner stallion however now breeding from 2nd generation I find that we need something with more bone without loosing quality. Many thanks for peoples answers.

I wasn't suggesting cheap but you do get many an over priced stallion with faults because of acheivements!! and sometimes you can get a super stallion for much less!!
I breed many old lines Cruising Spitfire etc... NOT CHEAP proven lines!!! finding them is the probelm under the sea of imports!!!

its cost me £2,200 so far for 2 unborn foals. I had an awful time last year, and for my first time at breeding horses.

one mare didn't get in-foal at all.
one mare got in-foal, then reabsorbed, then didn't take and then got in-foal.
one mare got in-foal 1st time only for it to be twins but luckily a successful pinching was carried out.

The stud was fantastic (Goshka Sport Horses) and charged me a LOT less for livery (about £1,000 less!!!!). AI was included in stud fee as well.
