How much money do you lose once a saddle is 'second hand'?

I bought 2 beautiful brand new Prestige saddles (dressage and jump) in June.
Devastatingly my horse has had an injury so I am looking to sell both saddles.
I have ridden in the dressage saddle once and the jump saddle twice.
How much money should I expect to lose as they are not now brand new (although they are as brand new obviously!)?
 
I would guess about a third of the original price - have a look online, it will give you a fair idea on what secondhand ones are selling for and then add a bit on because they are in mint condition.

Sorry your horse is broken.
 
Thank you LJR. They literally do look absolutely brand new.

One was £2,300 and the other was £3,500 in June. I haven't managed to find any similar online, the second hand ones are all fairly worn
 
Speak to the saddler that sold you the saddles they may take them back to sell them for you, usually for a commission between 15 - 20 %.
 
Oh I'm so sorry.
Could you not maybe look at keeping them or at least one for if you get another horse - that's if they are able to alter the fit easily to a new horse?
I'd love a prestige saddle, I was only drooling over the Helena dressage yesterday.

I guess you would be looking at getting about 50% of the new price. I gave up buying new saddles some years ago as it was just too expensive
 
If you intend to get a new horse why not speak to your saddler. I'm pretty sure mine would take it back and exchange for something to fit a new horse with very little loss if I had only ridden in the saddle a couple of times. I had a saddle for some weeks, used it several times but just didn't get on with it. It looked "as new" and my saddler just exchanged it for something else without any loss to me at all. I've also been left brand new saddles to try for a week, so if yours have only been used so little, they are effectively "new"
 
I won't be able to have a new horse unfortunately. I'll keep my mare and look after her to the best of my ability no matter what (she's only 8 so we've got lots of years together yet!). I can't afford to keep two horses the way that I would want to keep them.

I must admit that I'd be gutted to lose 50% on the saddles as they are no different to new ones, they really aren't. There are no signs of wear at all.

The saddler hasn't offered me a good deal at all unfortunately (wouldn't recommend them!!!).

Is eBay the best place to sell them do you think? Any other places I should advertise them?
 
You could advertise on preloved (for free) and if you aren't in a rush you might get someone looking for that exact saddle and get a bit more than half. If you do a search, preloved adverts come up, so I think its quite good unless you want them away right now. There's also saddles direct, they take a commission but they might be your best bet for maximising what you get.

Really as soon as you've paid for it the value drops a disgusting amount :(

My horse died 2 weeks after I bought her a new saddle, so I feel your pain. Luckily it fitted my new horse.
 
Saddles direct will give you a price which gives you a starting point at least. Then you can try and sell it privately (preloved/fb will mean you avoid the £ of sellers fees on ebay) first. Depends how much of a hurry you are in. We also have a local saddlery that will sell them for you and take a commission.
 
It really depends on the size; 18" saddles do not generally sell well/quickly. Same for N saddles. If it were a 17" or 17.5" Wide-ish saddle then I would be inclined to keep them for the right buyer but I woukd expect to lose 10-20% in a best case scenario. It's all about time of year as well; beginning of summer when horses change shape/ mature and there are shows to get to is usually the best time.
 
Try saddles direct to give you a ball park. I managed to get a fair bit more than they quoted, but it gave me an idea. My saddle was also much cheaper (£1000 new) and very slightly older (10 uses), and I ended up getting just shy of 1/2 new price. I was fortunate and had bought it second hand in the first place though.
 
I'm sorry about your horse, especially as such a young age. Wondered if you may be able to advertise the dressage one on the BD website for a fair price.

Asha, it's a 33cm and can be altered to fit but I'm not sure by how many CMs they recommend for them to be altered by.

I've had a look online, and they advise up to 2 sizes. To fit mine it would need 3. I sold one of mine through saddles direct. Didn't get as much as if I had sold privately, but it was no hassle at all
 
I bought a barely used Prestige Paris D for £1050, new price £2800.

I want a dressage saddle to go with it too now!!! Expecting to pay up to £1500 second hand
 
I've put them on eBay with £1,000 off the price I paid on each saddle.
It's gutting to lose £2,000 from riding in one twice and the other once but I'm most devastated with my horse's lameness obviously.
I'm not in a mad rush to sell them so hopefully the right people will come along. They will get a bargain too as they'll get a stunning, brand new saddle for £1,000 off!!
