How much of a star is your horse?

Hi everyone,

Just a quick post to tell you how much of a star my new horse is and for everyone else to tell about their wonderfull horses and give them the praise they deserve.

I got paddy last saturday he is a 14.2 irish sports horse cross cob.
We had an interesting start, he had come from a busy livery yard to my own quiet yard and hated it despite being told that he would be fine by his previous owner,he was very upset and so on monday i moved him to an amazing livery yard up the road. Despite him being uspet he was an angel, walked calmly on the lead rein to the new yard and is the most gentle and loving horse you could ever wish for.
He is just such a lovely boy even my mum who is afraid of horses loves him and is not worried about going in the stable and doing his feet etc. He picks each one up for you and is a pleasure to be around.
We went for our first ride on tues night, he was brilliant, very calm despite being in a new place! and was not phased by children on scooters hurteling around the corner at him!
wednesday we went in the school with another horse and he went like a dream, and lasnight we went in the school again, and i jumped for the first time in a few years....(ok it wasnt particularly pretty on my behalf!!!) but he was absolutely brilliant, jumped calmly and is just superb.

Sorry to rabble on and bore you but i just wanted to tell everyone how wonderfull he is!!!! and would love to hear about your horses!
 
awww he sounds fantastic - that'll be the cob in him ;)

My Murphy Pony is a superstar because he makes me smile everyday, and he always looks after me. Over the past 3 years he has helped me get past all my riding fears, and we conquered The Big One (hacking alone) in the past few weeks. he has had a poorly foot all week but has put up with it being prodded, poked, poulticed and treated. I took an afternoon off work yesterday and we spent hours together, it was lovely :)
 
Arhh, sounds lovely, they soon settle and wish you all the best with him.

I was going to say how lovely my girl is (has been such a super horse in the 15 years ive had her), but have just noticed that she has jumped the electric fencing AGAIN!!!!!! (and because of her age, i have stopped SJ as too scared to break her!) shes a minx!! xx

They bring you so much happiness......despite them being the most mischevious of creatures at times....!! Silvershadow81 that has made me chuckle, my previous pony soon realised we didnt electrify the fences around the yard....and we would watch him look at us, lift the fence with his teeth then sneak underneath them with an expression on his face as if to say..."ha ha"!! or he would stand there and lift them with his teeth and let them twang back just to let us know that "he had sussed" that they wernt electrified.

Wow to have had the same horse for 15 years must be wonderfull. The bond must be amazing.

I definately think the cob in him is good, although sometimes they can be cheeky! they are generally so good natured.
I had an arab for 3 years before i stopped riding to go to college and he was "highly strung" shall we say!......ok he was mad! and very strong, i loved him to pieces and we did some really good hacking but that was about all we could do...he wouldnt load in a trailer and when he was with other horses he was just to strong to controll...so we didnt do alot.
The second i sat on paddy i knew he was the horse, and considering i hadnt ridden for a few years! i got on him and it was like i had never stopped....and jumping him yesterday wasnt even nerve racking, he just fills you with confidence!

Bex1984, that is great to hear. well done for your acheivement of hacking alone, that must be fantastic. Really hope his foot gets better very very soon the poor boy.

Its lovely to hear how much people love their horses for the chachters that they are!
 
Everybody knows I think my G is a star! She's taken everything in her stride since I bought her, the only thing that really worries her are those notorious horse-eating yellow flowers. Jumping wise she's helped me build my confidence, and while we don't jump HUGE I'm chuffed to be jumping 2'6 semi-confidently. She's yet (with me) to have faults XC, and everyone on the yard adores her as well.
 
Zoooooomy is a star!!!!!! :D She always gets the sympathy vote since she has one eye :( But to be fair, she is such a brave little mare. She has not really had a great life but she is so honest and genuine.

We were both beginners at jumping but we have learned together. It's wierd since she is SOOO fizzy but I always feel safe on her. The polo pony in her means she will never be a dressage diva but she always tries hard and I adore her. With her I've done my first (and 20th!) sponsored ride, first dressage, first show, first clear-round SJ, first HT, and first hunt. She has really got me through the last few weeks after losing my gorgeous Monty too. She is just a happy little dude!

Love her so much :D
 
fihunt, your horse sounds lovely, a real gem, Well done to both of you that is brilliant to ear about your jumping and xc.
Lol its funny what makes them look isnt it, flowers (obviously out to savage any horse that dares go near them ;-) ) or those plants with the big leaves....that my previous horse thought were going to pounce on him!
Yet the scary things like children coming whizzing around the corner on 2 scooters or big vehicles and they dont bat an eyelid!

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Monty.
Zoomy sounds brilliant, it amazes me how horses that have had a bad start or have one eye (or both in her case) are so honest and willing to please. She sounds like such a genuine little mare and to have gone from being a polo pony to doing all of the other activities is wonderfull.
Had she always had one eye when you got her or did it happen whilst she belonged to you? If so how did you go about getting he back into work and doing all of the activities?

I am hoping to my first sponsored ride on paddy this summer and my first hunter trial when we have done some schooling together.

Lucy is a super star. I paid meat money for her and was told i should have her shot as she used to attack people as soon as look at them (she had been mistreated in her first two homes). It took over a year to gain her trust and when i was able to ride her i fell of her atleast once a day everyday. But now i have had her 12 years and they have been the best 12 years of my life. We have done everything together, hunting, dressage, show jumping, endurance, showing, sponsourd rides, been to the beach, she realy is my pony of a life time. She is ridden by the 5yr old i nanny for off the leadrein they even jump!! She can hunt while leading two ponies and she has also whipped in. She trys her heart out for me when it realy counts but can be cheeky and keeps me on my toes. In nov last year she was diagnosed with a very rare illness and the vets gave her a less than 50% chance, the bottom fell out my world, but she is still here and as cheeky as ever, fighting to beat the odds. I just don't know what i would do without my pony that would NEVER come right.

She lost her eye two owners before me. She was kicked in the face whilst she was still a polo pony.

From the sounds of it they didn't give her any special treatment, she was ridden as normal as soon as she recovered from the op! The only problem I had at the beginning was going through narrow gaps as she gets panicked. She is much better now she trusts me. Jumping - we just started small and went up!! She jumps natural fences better than show jumps but as long as you let her have a good look at it - she's a star!
 
Laura, what a lovley story. A massive well done for perservering with a horse that had been "written off" by everyone. Thats amazing that with time and perserverance that you have turned her into such a super horse and given her an amazing life. She looks absolutely beautiful. And to let a 5 year old on her and jump....well that just shows what a brilliant pony she is and what a brilliant job you have done with her.
I think it is in any horses nature to be just a little bit cheeky....i think it helps them to believe that they are still the boss as much as we try and make out that we are ;-) !!
I really hope that she continues to defy the odds and live a long and happy life with you.

Thankyou skychick. I'm so glad i didn't give up on her. She is still cheeky but she is horrified if she hurts you now. She is a compleatly different pony to the one i rescued. Infact people who see her now who knew her at the begining think i have just bought a new one who looks egsactly the same. lol
 
dont we all have lovely neds :)

my 5yo def lives up to his name (Star!!!) as he is just such a polite boy. never says no, alwys game for a new movement and never spooks, even at shows. he went out for the first time in 4 months last weekend and gave me 2 foot perfect rides, bless him.

after my previous very quirky and challenging horse, he is a joy to ride, i know im going to enjoy every session and not get off in tears!!!
 
Mines a star as well. He's 5 years old and is brill, I'm terrified of jumping but have been out over logs in the wood with him and he never batted an eye lid. Infact I'm yet to find anything he will say no to! Not complaining tho, it's brill having a pony that says "yes mummy I will do that" and not argue with me. :)
 
My little Raff is a star. he puts up with an awful lot from me (bouncing around like a numpty, gripping with my knees, shaking, and sometimes, if he's lucky, crying and dripping snot on him).

but, one day i'll be brave and then he'll be a star for taking me on adventures.

he's perfect for me. :)
 
Lol Laura! I bet that makes you chuckle with pride when they think it is a different horse.

Star sounds wonderfull and looks like a very handsome boy!
I am finding the same, my new horse is a refreshing change from my previous horse who i had the same thing, after jumping i would get off and be so upset because i couldnt get confident as he was so fast and strong and was also quirky, it is nice to e able to get on and know your gonna have fun....at the end of the day...its what it is all about!
For 5 years old Star certainly sounds like he lives up to his name!!!

Im loving hearing about our wonderfull horses/ponies.
 
Picolencole i love the markings on your horse. Especially the little black patch over his eye. He looks beautifull.
Keep up the good work with the jumping, before you know it you will be jumping him confidently and you will wonder why you were ever worried!

Clipcloppop Raff sounds like a gem. you will get confident! Just build up slowly, doing a little bit at a time and your lovely horse will take care of you and teach you all you need to know!
 
My little 5.y.o mare ( who raced last year) always gives 100% and never stops trying to do her absolute best for you. She is so full of spirit and love for life and loves to please and do the right thing. She is always a rewarding horse to ride and learns quickly , and remembers everything, but never uses it against you. When I ride her I have a smile on my face, its never a battle of wills like it has been with so many of my other horses who physically/mentally did not want to do it- its so hard to find a horse like this!! Also I admire her toughness. When she was in racing every day she was cantering 5 miles a day, 6 days a week plus 2 hours on the horsewalker every day. ( very tough trainer) yet every day she came out battling, full of spirit and did her absolute best while other horses were very sore and unwilling. And she came out of racing without a mark on her- she was a little bit sore and stiff but responded very welll to various treatments.
Best of all she moves nicely, has a super-collectable canter, has the right head for dressage, is very carefull with her showjumping and is electric off the floor when she jumps, with very fast reactions and is very quick thinking. She can be very silly and stressy in the stable and field, but she is generally a total star :-) I would have to search long and hard to find another one like her!!
 
It sounds like your ex racers are worth their weight in gold. YOu both sound like you have got such genuine horses who have put their racing past behind them and are very willing to learn that they dont have to go flat out all of the time!!! and to do it without a battle.....well done them!
 
My lad is a sweetheart. He was another meat money boy who'd been neglected for 18 months and looked like a hat rack with twisted legs when I got him. He was the gentlest horse to break and was doing really well til he hurt his sacriliac joint slipping on some railway sleepers. He's endured his 9 month rehab like a star and is currently off being rebroken and going like a super star!! He's gentle genuine and quirky but in a nice way. He'd really rather be a lap dog than a 17hh TB and occasionally proves the theory you can't have both beauty and brains but I wouldn't be without him.

He's also helped with the burning loss of the biggest star of a pony my River bear. There isn't enough room to type why Riv was a superstar but needless to say when I thought I would never had the confidence to ride again Riv brought me back to it in style with smiles and laughter all the while, despite being sold for 'behavioural' issues he proved that all some horses want is to be loved, trusted and listened to...

Riverboy, i think you are totally right, all they want is to be loved, to know that their owner is going to do all they can to take the best care of them and know that no matter what happens.......there will always be hay!!!!!!
Its so awfull the number of people that neglect horses, i dont know how the hell they can do it, but is it so good to hear that there are people like you Riverboy and Laura aswell that have brought these ponies back to health and happiness and have given them the good life they deserve. Well done guys, both of your stories are so inspiring and show that these ponies have so much to give and should not be written off.

Riverboy i have been laughing at the though of a 17hh laphorse ;-)

Sometimes you dont need the fastest jumper, the best dressage horse, the ones with personality are worth more than anyother in my eyes. The ones that make you laugh every day!
