How much - older happy hacker type?

Slightly hypothetical at this point, but wanted to at least start looking at options as my youngster’s current companion will be going home soon and we have a spare stable just begging to be filled! ?

My usual type is very much your neurotic WB with a bit of spark about them, but now we have the horses at home I’m looking to fill our empty stable with a chilled happy hacker type so I can enjoy relaxed wanders and have something sane enough to nanny the youngster when he’s backed next year. Don’t mind something with a bit of life about it but it’d be great if it were sensible enough that the novice husband could have a sit on every once in a while so realistically we’re going to be looking at 16.2+. I’d love a proper old fashioned ID type but very much doubt our budget would stretch that far in the current market.

Between work and my current boys I’m pretty busy so the ideal would be to find an older gelding that’s looking for an easier life and doesn’t need riding every day. Bonus points if they’re happy to do the odd bit of schooling too but that’s not essential by any stretch! We’re more than happy to take on something that needs a bit of maintenance to keep comfy but would need to fit with our current routine so out during summer and in at night during winter. Equally would consider a genuine old head on young shoulders type. Would potentially consider a long term loan but would prefer to buy if possible.

The current market is mad and this is so far from my usual type I have no idea how much I’m realistically going to need to spend for something like this, so wonderful HHOers, what do I need to budget and where the heck do I find such a creature?

I’d imagine you’d be looking about £4500+ for something genuine and safe, the lower end of that would be your golden oldies/things that need a bit of maintenance. Mine is an 11yo with no long term issues who wouldn’t be a million miles from that description, and I was planning to advertise for offers around £9000 when he goes up for sale.

If you are looking for something that is totally safe for your husband in all situations and will not put a foot wrong or have anything wrong with it then I wuld suggest that you would be looking at paying about £12,000

I’m more than happy to take on a higher mileage type with some wear and tear, and realistically the likelihood of the husband wanting to do anymore than having the odd sit is highly unlikely so definitely not looking for a paragon of virtue. If we need £12k for a light hack type I think we’ll be best off scrapping the idea and looking for a companion instead.

Ah that’s a bit more reassuring! Budget is somewhat scaleable for the right horse but having spent 5 figures not so long ago on my new dancing partner there’s absolutely no way I’ll be able to justify more than mid 4ish for what will be a glorified companion that’s happy to hack.

Yes, I’m sure you’d find something for that price range. I’ve seen a few things that would be in that category for £5-7000. It’s not what I’m looking for so haven’t enquired but they are out there!

The best thing to do is look at the different sites and see what something similar to what you want is being advertised at. Don't forget to look at Dragon Driving and Preloved, you can sometimes find gems on there at bargain prices, if you have your wits about you.

If you are happy with a creaky teenager then I’m sure if you can be a little patient you will get what you want for 2.5-3k - there will be caring owners out there that will appreciate an experienced private semi-retirement home

A creaky teenager would be ideal as they’ll very much be playing 2nd/3rd string to my other boys in terms of my ridden time (attention wise they’ll want for nothing though and will be a much loved member of the family). We’re in no real rush, I’m just conscious the current companion has been with us a lot longer than originally planned due to covid and whilst I’m eternally grateful I don’t want to inadvertently take the pee with the owner’s generosity.

I think a long term loan could be a good bet on a limited budget if you’re happy to maintain creaky joints etc. If my mum doesn’t get along with my old pony club horse when he comes back into work then we’ll likely be looking to find him a loan home in the autumn. Probably too speedy and too small to suit you but just as an example of what’s out there - it sounds like you’re what a lot of people are looking for in a loan home.

Ah good shout, my go to is usually HorseQuest which hasn’t been throwing up much that isn’t £££ so will definitely broaden the search a little.

No issue with managing creaky joints and the like. I figure it’s probably par for the course with the kinda horse we’re looking for.

Sorry tapped post before I’d finished! Edited now but yes, I expect there’s quite a few like mine that aren’t up to competitive work but are sane enough to behave themselves in a more relaxed home.
