I've read on here often that some people give thier horse Piriton for allergies. How much would you give?

I have a friend whose pony (14.2hh) has rubbed his tail almost bald. She is giving him one Piriton tablet each day. I would have thought that this would not be enough bearing in mind the size of him compared to the size of a human.

Not sure if she had a vet out, she just mentioned to me that they were trying him on one piriton per day.

(I know if it was me with a pony with a nearly bald tail, I would consult the vet).

my friend had a 16h ish cleveland bay x and he basically had hay fever. he used to take 10-15 tablets a day.i would recommend that your friend speak to the vet and also if they say its ok for the pony to be on piritron, buy chemist own brand or try to get wholesale type pot of 100 as if buying normal piritron over the counter its very pricy.

Ditto that. I was advised (by my vet) that I could try my horse, who has terrible allergies, on Piriton but the numbers I was quoted meant that I would go through hundreds every month so I didn't try. I tried homeopathy instead

I take up to two piriton a day along with another hay fever tablet (don't worry I'm not OD'ing, it's doctors advice!) so I would imagine that the one a day your friend is feeding will have no effect!
I would never give my horse tablets without consulting a vet though. Has she tried creams etc? Surely that would be a better route?!?

Don't think I'd dare give piriton to my horse. It knocks me out and leaves me feeling like i have a hefty hangover afterwards so don't think I'd like my horse feeling the same way!
