My friends daughter has had a 14.2 pony on loan for a year. The loan is up in 2 weeks time. My friend wants to buy the pony, but is not sure what is a fair price. The pony is as mentioned 14.2, 16 years old, push button at x-country and show jumping, not too hot at dressage. She is a mare with lots of rosettes. She is now a little stiff, but she is a point and go pony there is no doubt. She has done a lot of pony club stuff with great success. The seller was asking £4500 for her as a 14 year old and people were waiting to snap her hand off. Bearing in mind the not so good market now, but the fact my friend has had her for a year on loan, what would be a fair price do you think. I would be very grateful for your thoughts as my friend is worrying herself to death that she won't be able to afford this pony and her daughter loves it to bits. I am not much help as I don't have too much to do with the pony side of things, only the big horse side

How stiff is she? I'd want a vet to look at her to be honest, then decide from there. If she's not going to have soundness issues maybe £2,000. But it really depends what you're prepared to pay, its so difficult to price horses.

I wouldnt say age is an issue atall, lots of people pay £2000 minimum for a ''bombproof'' push and go ride up to age of 20!

Judging by what you have said Id say £2000+ dependant on whether the stiffness was from something that could get progessively worse or whether its just a bit of old age, that wont have any real effects for a few years.

Id much rather pay £2000+ for a pony my child trusts and loves and knows, than £1000 for something new that could bomb off....

I have to wonder, did they really have people queueing for £4500? I mean, it may have been advertised at that, but maybe that was all? If advertised for sale, with that many people interested, they would have sold her, no? I recon they may be trying it on, as they know loaner isn't very knowledgable (sp?) with that sort of thing.

I would say £2500 tops!

I think OzzyBuffy makes a good point. Whilst your friend doesn't want to be ripped off I think I'd rather pay a little over the odds for a pony that the child knows and which the mother knows her daughter will be safe on. You don't say how old the child is, but for a young kiddie I should think that knowing your child is as safely mounted as possible is priceless.

Can you compare to similar ponies for sale online to get an idea of what they're selling for?

I would say around the £2k mark or a bit more.
Pony is safe, daughter is confident on her and pony if kept well could still be being ridden for another 10+ years.
So when you look at it in that context is £2000 really that much money

What figure has your friend offered you?

But more importantly - this could the ponies last home. And if it's the right one - what price can you put on that????

We sold my daughters pony who was very good at bsja, could do a nice Dressage test, very bold and strong xc, turned 15 this year and we got £4500 which i thought was a good price especially as she wasnt everyones ride and in this current climate. I would of thought £3500 was a good price if not more as people will pay good money for a safe push button ride.

HI

I am currently being driven nuts looking for a trustworthy etc and if you know this horse well etc after what I have been looking at probably worth a good bob.

I think if you are spending that kind of money it would be worth a vetting as it could lower the price if something more is revealed etc(you may put others off too) but peace of mind too. Thats a lot of money.

That is a very healthy budget so if you dont succeed for that price am sure you would be able to get someone to find something good for you. But that is a nice size 14.2 and should last someone a good while. You can always negotiate, ie they know it will be in an excellent home and well cared for etc rather than go to a stranger.

Perhaps have a look at some other horses for sale in the meantime at that price to see what you could have(if you dare, minefield horse buying and selling)

Good luck
