How Much - Project Horse ??

15.1 m/w piebald cob gelding, 11 yrs. Good to do in all respects and not pushy on the ground. Forward going ride, can get a little strong in a snaffle. Good box, shoe, catch in traffic etc. Excellent jumper. hacks alone/company. Can be wary of strangers getting on him but fine once he knows you. Needs further schooling by very experienced, confident rider to bring out full potential. How much is he worth ?

£2000.. £1500, because he's wary of strangers that may put buyers off! I may be TOTALLY off but yeah...

If I were you I wouldnt sell him as a project horse- he's too old to be that green in his work to make it worth someone's while bringing him on. As a project horse he's worth about £800

If you can sell him as a happy hacker you'll probs have more interest at about the £1500 mark

I would say more than £700 you dont get horses for that these days. Could you say loan with view to buy then he will get to know his new owner first? Is he just green when you say needs schooling? would he do as a nice one on one hack? lots of people just want to hack and thats enough for them- maybe he'd suit someone like this?

I agree with the loan with a view to buy, as the owner may want to know what the horse is like once you know him!

You can still get them for that these days, you just have to look a bit harder and not on the 'open' market. God knows they have to be cheap if I am ever going to buy another

Maybe I did not explain it well when I said needs more schooling he certainly has the basics, just needs more work on canter as he has quite a long canter stride. I think he would suit an experienced rider as an allrounder.

It does seem mad that is all he is worth on the private market as I have been told he would make 1500 at auction although this is not a route I am going to go down.. Looks like he is going to be doing some more schooling before we decide what to do..
 
I agree with the comments above - and just wanted to ask why an experienced rider capable of schooling him on, would actually want to bother?
What are his USPs that might get someone interested?

Well I would say he would make £1500 and maybe even more as being a coloured middleweight is a very popular choice these days and I know someone (rightly or wrongly) that paid £2000 for a 13 y.o. un-reg Sec D five wks ago who had basically been backed and left in a field for 9 years. So there are definitely buyers out there and like I say his colour and build go for him not against him. A lot of the time it can depend on how you present the horse to the buyer, if you suss out what it is they're looking for and get the horse going nicely for them and for what they're interested in then you'll get your price. Let me know if you decide to sell him for £700, I'd definitely be interested in having a look!
 
I bought my first horse as an 11 year old, he had done nothing but riding school work all his days, rubbish muscle tone and a lovely 'upside down' neck. However, we managed to jump out of Foxhunter and he won about £900 BSJA before he retired so older doesn't always mean limited potential! Come to think about it, he was a 15.1hh coloured lcob type too who didn't know the meaning of the word outline, and he was sold out of the school because he was a grumpy so and so who kept trying to bite the little kids - clever boy

I wouldn't sell as a project horse as he's too old for someone to 'go back to basics' as it basically means starting again.

Perhaps sell as a hack horse for £1500 - £2000?
 
I have to agree - 11 is very old for a project. Why is he a project horse, he may have a long canter stride but do cobs not? Surely collection isn't important to someone who was say, looking for a first pony club horse, or a happy hacker. If he's wary of strangers then you may have problems. The reason I say pony club is that he's an excellent jumper, a forward going ride, and easy in all respects. A pony club kid will put the time and effort into his canter work and, being the colour he is, you'd get about £1500 - 2k.
 
Personally I think £3500, I assume he canters out hacking and can canter on a 20 metre circle? The vast majority of horses aimed at riding club/happy hacking will not have a collected canter. Leave the last sentance off and replace it with 'would suit confident , experienced rider'.
