Hello,
I've got a (very overweight) 13hh heavy weight cob gelding, whose weight I'm trying to get down. I measure him up with a weight tape every week (I know, they aren't accurate) and last week it read 470KG, where as this week 408KG. I'm just wondering what the average weight is for 13hh cobs like him? Thanks!

I'm wondering if there's a typo in your post, 62 kg in a week is impossible ... Mind you, measuring with a measuring tape is a bit of an art, needing to work with same time after bringing in etc.

You could try a local weighbridge. Check out www.gov.uk/find-weighbridge. Contact weighbridge first to see if they will allow you to bring pony. Take pony in trailer/box to weighbridge. Weigh trailer/box with pony inside on weighbridge. Record weight. Drive off. Take pony out. Weigh trailer/box again. Subtract one from the other. Be aware, if it is a commercial weighbridge it could be very busy and noisy with lots heavy trucks moving in and out.

Aim for a weight loss per week of 2.5 kg, over ten weeks that is 25kg.
Starvation is not a sucessful slimming practice in horses as they need to eat little and often. Soak hay 12 hours , rinse and feed. Add minerals and salt to replace those lost in soaking.
Learn how to condition score, and do lots of brisk walking.
There is no ideal weight but there is an ideal condition.

Ditto Clueless. There is either a typo or a flaw in your weigh tape technique! If it helps for context I have a 13.2 heavy cob who weighs between 410Kgs and 420Kgs on a weigh tape. He is weighed properly at least once a year and is within 10kgs of that - I think he was 414Kgs this summer. He is very fit - hunted twice and week and competed through the summer so lots of muscle. Proper condition - not show hunter which to my eye is a bit plump.

My 13.1hh fell was 444kg on the topspec weighbridge, he's fairly fit and looks about the right condition (nutritionist agreed as well).
