We are taking the plunge and moving our horses to a field where it will just be the two of them so obviously everything will be DIY and we need to source our own haylage and straw. I have absolutely no idea how much small bale haylage costs and also how many bales will I need to buy?? (i have two horses who will be having haylage ad lib) How long does one bale last two horses on average?

I appreciate any replies please :) hopefully going to buy some tomorrow but I needed an indication on a reasonable price to avoid paying over the odds!

The cheaper small bale haylage is about £6 a bale depending on where you live. If you need the more expensive branded stuff like horsehage or Timothy then you will pay more like £8 a bale. Hay - if you opt for that instead - is also about £6 a bale at the moment.

One bale lasts my cob on limited feed about a week. A small bale on two eating ad lib (do you really mean that in relation to haylage?) will probably only last a matter of days. However the big bales will be too big for just two and will turn too fast. We have the big bales split between 8 and they last about a week which is all you can leave haylage open for really.

Straw- -I have no idea becuase we use shavings. Sorry!

Why not look on the internt to see what the retailers around you are selling it for?

Feeding small bale haylage around 20 - 25 kg will work out very expensive for you.You could easily go through a bale a day at least. Last time i bought from a feed shop it was between £6 and £7. Buy in smalls in bulk direct from a supplier will still be around £5. Last year when the weather cooled i was getting 50kg bales for gelston collected for £8.00 but you can get bigger bales 150kg from other suppliers such as baillie that size would be better for feeding 2 horses but then you have delivery costs. This year i have seen straw at £2.00 a bale round here, i paid 60p if i got it myself off the field. A local farmer my have some large rounds he could deliver for you i pay about £10 for those. It all depends on what area of the country you are prices can vary enormously. Hope this helps.

Okay thanks for that - i was quoted £5 by a local farmer although he did say the price may be going up so that sounds about right really.

Ive payed £1.90 for a bale of straw £5.50 a bale of hay, £15 for a real of straw and £37 for hay if picked up and £42 delivered and im in Kent, it all depends on where you are. x
