How much should I pay for a hunter type?

I am going back to see the least expensive of the two horses my OH and I viewed today but I am worried that they are asking too much for him. I know that pricing horses isn't an exact science but what would you expect to pay for an 8 yr old 16.1 hh, hunter type, who has hacks out in company (not sure about on his own but we wouldn't need him to), does low level dressage test and is currently being used on working livery to teach beginners how to jump?

He felt safe and comfortable to ride and we both liked him but we're not sure what price we should offer. Any suggestions? We've tried looking at other ads but can't really find anything similar.

Granted I'm down south. If he's a nice sort, a bit of a saint, but not going to set the world a light (which I think you've described) I would say about £4000?

Not being funny or anything but you knew how much it cost you liked the horse when you tried it, how about getting it vetted and pay what they are asking if its what you want?!

I'd say around £3000 max as he doesn't sound like he's done much but then if he is safe then his owners will probably think he's worth this.

I think she's trying to make sure she's not being ripped off....

Yeah probably but you can't tell without looking at it! I just get sick of selling horses having people try to beat you down on price. When i price horses at the price i want, I pay asking prices for horses i want. I Don't look at things i can't afford.

Yes, I am just trying to make sure that I am not paying too much. I can afford him at the price he advertised at but the ad says "ono" so I think they will be expecting an offer rather than me just paying the full asking price. I haven't bought a horse without someone else doing the negotiating before so I was trying to seek a bit of advice. Thanks.

I think everyone expects to be haggled with when selling a horse.

With his age, a nice age, and how quiet he is, I would say around the 3k mark as he hasnt really done anything, and reflecting that you dont know what he is like hacking alone.

OK then 10 to 15% is probably what they are thinking.

Depends on how he would do in the show ring, which would depend on his conformation. Hunters do fetch a lot more money than TB's so anything upto £6000

If he is just a nice sort but average conformation then more likely £3-4000

Difficult to say without seeing a picture. Could be anything from £2k to £8k! I would say nearer the £3k mark unless he has stunning conformation. However, a horse is worth whatever a prospective buyer is willing to pay for it, and if this is the horse for you, then he is priceless
