I have just got a mini Shetland on loan who's very fat. I have a muzzle on order and will be weighing out her hay and soaking it. But to weigh I need to know her ideal weight so I can work out the percentage. Any idea? This is my first small one!

My welsh section a (finely built but 12hh) is only 197kgs on the weigh bridge possibly a bit more now as she was a tad skinny and dehydrated then. So I wouldn't have thought much more than 100-150kgs for a mini. Weigh tapes are rubbish though .. She's 345kgs on mine so it's waaaay off!

I'd go with around 120- 150 Kgs ish too. Weigh tapes are not recommended for minis. Her bone needs to be taken into account as well. I have one very light boned and two much sturdier.
Do a condition score weekly.

A few years ago a vets guestimate of one of mine was 200 Kgs and she wasn't over weight.

Wouldnt pay too much attemtion to the weight tape, my 15.2 tb x cob comes up at 415 and my 14.2 finer boy at 510... whilst my 9.2 slim, narrow shetland comes up at 220!
