I've only ever had horses at home, living out all year round and with no extra feed.

On average, how much straw bedding (small bales preferably!) do you use in one year? And what sort of regime is that? (how much time does the horse actually spend in the stable throughout the year? are they messy? etc)

Just trying to estimate how much of our straw we'd need to set aside for livery use :)

My bnch are between 16hh and 17hh, messy horses 1/2 a bale a day, not so messy horses 1/3 a bale a day.. don't really want to work out exact costs...

Not sure only just moved onto straw however last time one mare was on straw used 2 bales a day thats why i swapped. So far have used around 6 bales in past 2 weeks, already had a new straw bed down in stable.

cool. well, we should have enough stables for 12 (4 pony sized, 7 horse sized and one very large horse sized!), so it'll be good to have more input so we have a rough idea as to how much of our straw we should be keeping aside.

I`ve got one 16.1hh and 1 16.3hh, both deep littered on straw, pick out poohs daily, and wet out when it needs to, normally one a week/fortnight,

If using big bales, i use 1 big bale each

smaller bales 1/2 bale during the week to top up, then about 2 when i`m taking the wet out.... all depends on how messy they are and how much more straw i need to put down to get a good depth

when mine were on straw I would take wet out daily.

My 15hh Connemara is normally very clean - would use maybe 1 1/2 - 2 bales per week on him.

The TB is a messy bugger - prob 3 bales a week for him!

When I got the New Forest he turned out to be a very messy manky pony who also ate his straw. Got through about 4 bales a week on him for the 2 weeks he was on straw before I gave up and moved to wood pellets!!
