I'm going to change my boys feed soon on to a 'simple systems' type diet. He's a 16.2 skinny TB, on ad lib haylege and turned out every day, in at night.
SS reckon I should be feeding 2.7kg daily= 900g sugar beet dry weight, which is 1 level/ just under round scoop. This seems like alot to me!

It will be split into two feeds , but I'm worried they will be too big for his tummy. This is ment to be fed with 1.8 kg of their lucibix (alfalfa); that equates to 4 heaped/ rounded scoops of alfa A.
I have looked at speedi-beet info and they suggest the same amount of beet daily, but don't say how to offer it.
How would i be best to feed this amount of food? I can't do more than 2 feeds a day.

If thats what they recommend and you gave them all of his details correctly then I would have thought it would be fine. 1 scoop a day split into two feeds sounds reasonable to me.

As with any new feed I would introduce it gradually and see how it goes

That sounds about right for that size a horse, it all depends how much feed he is getting on top.

With regards to you saying it might be to much, when you feed Sygar Beet it can act as a laxative too! Sugar Beet has its benefits, if fed too sloppy, it will go straight through him and takes everything else with it! Yes Sugar Beet has to be soaked abd to be on the safe side, often it is out in too much water so instead of being nicely moist, a scoop contains as much water as it does sugar beet.
When you feed him try and drian some of the excess off or use it then to soak and them cook some linseed in.

Hello I feed ss type diet and mine get about 6kg of sb, alafalfa and grass nuts split into two feeds and they are fine, as it's all fibre it won't do any harm. Its concentrates (oats, barley etc..) you can't feed a lot of in one go, a fibre based diet is fine. Also a lot of mollassed SB can cause problems if fed in large amounts but unmollased is ok. But you could always check with SS to set your mind at rest

there tums can only hold 2. something(i forget :s) kg of food at a time therefore if feeds are any bigger than that the rest is just pushed out the tum and undigested therefore a waste of money

If this is what Jane at SS recommends, then don't worry. Her feeds are digested quite differently to cereal-based feeds. I have seen her competing in endurance rides and her horse gets as much as he will eat at vet gates and has never tied up or got colic, she really does know what she is talking about. Her feeds are excellent and your horse will be happier, healthier and calmer on her feeds.

I know they say it's ok with a fibre based feed- it just seems alot; once it's soaked it will be about 3-4 scoops.
Should I give the alfa a seperatly? Otherwise he will have about 4 scoops of food per meal.

I know you are always taught not to feed more than 4lbs in one go but I think sugarbeet counts as part of the fibre ration so you can feed much more per feed. Bailey has alpha a and fibrebeet up to the top of the feed bowl and I've never had a problem.

I'm sure she would be only to happy to discuss it with you if you're unsure.

My lad is on a similar feeding regime and is currently on 1 1/3 scoops of beet (when dry), between 2 feeds
Jane at SS knows her stuff, and they'll often go between eating their feed to their hay, so don't always eat in all in one go.
