Someone's asked me to back some of their horses - I have no idea what to charge them for it though. Would I charge per hour? If so, what's the "going rate"?!
Usually £30 per session as you dont spend an hour riding - if you are backing then you might want to use 20mins familiarising horsey with you and then be on its back for short periods. Or some people do weekly rate of £150 so that they get consistant backing for a week ready for the owners to get on when they are sure they arent going to go completely mental.
I'm pretty local to you M_M and when I was looking for someone to back my 3yr old last year prices ranged from £120 - £150 per week - PM me for more details if you like
I'd say mates rates £100 per week for your time/danger money, guess it depends on if your just backing or doing lots or prep work, lunge/long reining before hand to build them up ready for backing, or backing then doing a some light ridden work afterwards, guess backing can mean different things to different people and how far they want you to take them and what they want you to do prior to backing.
The yard I sent my youngster when I went away (and no one at the yard would get on a 4yo that tried to bronc you straight off) was £90 per week. This included everything (all looking after, feed, work, handling him whilst having his first set of shoes on etc). I decided to send him to a breaking/backing yard, as they were the only yard that would actually ride him, and I wanted his education to continue whilst I was away. IMO £90 a week is too cheap though, I don't know how they covered their costs. They did a brilliant job with him. I'm going to send all my youngsters there to be backed in future!

A horse that's backed in a week isn't backed for any practical purposes! It takes 3-4 weeks to do a decent job with most horses - and the horse will still obviously be very green and need bringing on by a competent rider. We take a lot for backing, and charge £140 per week - most horses stay 3-4 weeks unless the owner wants them brought on further. Most go home walk, trot and canter on boh reins, and hacking out calmly with a sensible companion or alone.
