My little welsh sec a is being clipped this sunday. He's been on a diet, on a track system, only has soaked hay, had in hand walks and lunging and yet has only managed to shift 9kg since March 😅 so, I've decided he can't be a feral yeti this winter. What sort of clip do you think is most sensible? I don't want to have to wrap him up 24/7 so nothing major but is a bib or trace enough to make a difference?

All off!
Winter is your friend.
Mine is completely naked and has a 50g for downpours or dire emergencies.
It means he can be keeping the tb company on good grass and ad lib hay/haylage, but he's still not fat 😊

We clipped my sister's little welsh one year when we were going to be hunting. Total clip and rugged him. Rug lasted one night and he tore it to shreds. Stayed naked after that and survived with no problem. Out 24/7 as well.

I start with a bib, with no rug. If they are doing work a low trace, perhap like in the photo, depending on the weather no rug or a light rug. Always leave the top of their face/ ears, clip to the bridle line, do not clip their legs and leave their tail alone. I live in EA, so it fairly dry so I hardly ever rugged.

Ditto, I am in the fens in Cambs so very open and lots of wind so it's usually dry(ish). What you've described is almost exactly what we did, although I did thin his tail out a little because it's super heavy and was getting difficult to maintain. He doesn't appear to have noticed he's been clipped apart from he doesn't like his clipped bits being touched at the moment 😅

If he lives out I would not take his knickers off. Maybe bib and belly as long as he has a decent rug on which is deep enough, or you could do a dealer clip.
