How much to geld a colt?

I had my well endowed 2 yr old gelded ( done standing ) in march and my bill was £180 but that included visit, all sedation and a weeks antibiotic.
 
my 4 yr old was just under £500 cos he had serious swelling and extra pain and antibiotic jabs for a couple of weeks and all the extra call out charges ,on the other hand my 2 yr old was £100 and as straight forward as they come. so very difficult question to answer !
 
When I had my colt gelded it was around £200, he had to have a few visits for antibiotics after as his stitches kept popping open :-/
 
Had ours done 6 weeks ago, he's a TB/Selle Francais, about 14 hh at the moment, and we took him to the vets (i.e. no call out), done standing under sedation - no complications and no further treatment needed and the cost was £320!
 
£100 each for 2 yearlings in March this year, included post op antibiotics as well as sedation etc etc. Standing castration. Deal was based on minimum of 2 colts being done, immediate payment and me providing a helper as well as me being there. It was best deal I could find, the other 2 local vets were more expensive than that. The boys were also gelded by one of the senior partners so we weren't fobbed off in any way. My regular horse vets wanted £175 each minimum.

I can't believe some of the prices above for straightforward standing castrations...

I paid just over £200 a fortnight ago to geld a 10 year old. That was call out, he was put on his back, op and the extras. the actual procedure was £111 I think.
 
I just looked on my bill, the castration was £93, £111.60 with VAT.

Then there was the visit and the following meds:

Ketaset inj
Domidine 20ml
Dolorex inj
Depocillin inj
Equipalazone inj
Equipalazone sachets
Lignocaine & Adrenaline

Eq Intravenous Injection Fee
 
I know what you mean, my vet estimated £200-£300 that was the narrowest margin I could get them to commit to! I budgeted £350 when he ended up having more sedation, then more...as he wouldn't go down, then more jabs for something else etc I started thinking eek, this is really going to be pushing the limit! I'd already been warned it would probably be towards the upper end of the estimate due to him being older, so was really surprised when it came in at just over £200 with the extra meds! I put the left over to one side towards any future bills, though maybe should have just paid it straight into my account at the vets lol!
 
I had my yearling done 2 weeks ago. £225. I found a few vets wouldn't do it in the summer months because of flys and infection. I took him to the vets on the Sunday night because he was to have no food for 12hrs before. Snipped at 8am and then stayed/stabled for the next 24hrs. I collected him Tues and his been in the field since. But for the first week I was washing blood of his legs every day and the applying strong Coopers fly rep. so add another £35. Plus 5 days of antibiotics.
But he didn't get a infection - but I was on the case and he is insured so further problems would have been covered.

Never thought of the blood situation afterwards - I think I may be feeling guilty for days afterwards!!

My guilt disappeared when the naughty colt was replaced by a lovely affectionate boy who no longer thought I'm his play toy. :)

My boy has white legs so I was scrubbing them each night - after 4 days it was not so bad. But I thought blood would attract flys and midges. I was also on a massive poo picking mission for the first few weeks.

Section A yearling colt cut standing last month. All drugs, call out and work=£92 inc VAT. No problems, little dripping, no discharge or swelling. Randy little swine now a gentle chap. Having seen the size of the "stones" (cor!) not very surprised he was getting a bit fruity...much happier without them and cheap at twice the price.
