How much to geld roughly?

Basically I've been offered a colt for free and am really tempted however I would obviously like to geld him as I don't want a handfull of a pony as he would be for my neice when he's broken in a few years, and tbh I don't want a stallion :p so from your experiences how much is it to geld. Just wanting to get a few things sorted in my head before i make my descision :) xx
 
I'm in north Yorkshire and had my lad gelded in october as a 2 yr old, it was £225 and be was put right out not standing
My vets varies according to size and my boy was about 13.2

please do not think that the suggested colt once gelded (roughly!!) (*anything up to £300 if all goes to plan) will be suitable for your neice. he is young, he needs a lot of work before he is suitable for anyone....
 
It's a rip-off if your vet wants a general anaesthetic, find someone who will do him standing sedated like the VAST majority of horses his age are done. Don't go with the old-fashioned type of vet who would cast him (tie him up and push him to the ground) either :(
 
im getting my colt done the cost for my 9month old is 280.00 with call out again this is done by height hes roughly 13.2:)
 
Sorry should have explained that my niece is only two years old at the minute so he would be for her in the distant future (trying to find a use for him as he'll only make 13 hands at most and I'm 5ft 8" and well I'm not a sparrow :p) If not I'd probably use him for driving or the likes, I haven't got that far yet as i say it's only in the early planning stages but I want to have as much info as possible before making a commitment and getting lumbered with a horse that would be wasted. :) x
 
Whereabouts are you? The Royal Vet College in Potters Bar used to do it for about £150 I believe - a friend sent her colt there only a year or so ago. It is done by students but supervised (roughly of course) by senior vets.
 
Anything from £200-£350, depends how many vets,and the drugs they use, as my youngster is not very good with strangers and when he sees the vet,he will run a mile,but gets himself very upset,when he see her,she has had to do a couple of nasty(to him) things done, and to be honest I don't blame him,it's like me being dragged to the dentist when I was a small child. And bless him he's booked in for next month.
 
My vet does them standing for 100 euro each, that includes dope, tet injection and long acting antibiotic and local injected into the area to be dealt with.:). He does a lot of them in the spring, one week that he came here to do 5 he had already done 80 that week, nice little earner! Joking aside, he is one of the best at it, very quick and efficient and I have yet to have any swelling or bleeding afterwards.

took the words out of my mouth, they did 2 of mine last week too :)
One done standing the other was put to sleep (as had temp day before so op was prosponed a day and didnt want to cause him more stress) both done at £100 + vat which includes a night at chiltern equines yard...well worth it if your in herts/beds or bucks area
 
Are Chiltern Equine still gelding colts for £100 + VAT? I am looking at a colt at the weekend and was searching round to find how much it will cost to get him gelded.

Hall Place quoted £300 + call out fee, which I thought was pretty expensive!
 
I had a 13.2 cob gelded if all went well and it cost me £220 i am in northwest england. But you can have complications so i would consider having some spare money in case of any ifections ect...
also you need to keep a good eye on the horses behaviour and swelling and try to keep the horse moving to help reduce the swelling that what the vet told me so make sure there is a paddock to excersise in without getting the wound infected. OH and be aware the vet may leave the balls and blood all over for u to clean! Barf i had too !

LOL - what did you do with them!?!!?
 
Got a shovel closed my eyes and threw them on the muck heap!!

I was like oh thanks for the kind gift i give you £220 and you leave me some fresh balls on the floor to clean up! ha
 
Just phone and ask the vet you usually use. Ask if bringing him to the surgery will be cheaper- saves the call out fee.
He is a tiddler so shouldn't be more than £200.
