Just reading a recent post on here, It got me wondering how much it costs to geld.

I am seeing many colts free to good home, and wondered why do people not geld and then sell on for the price of the operation?

Surely it is far easier to find a good home for a gelded colt than an entire one.

Probably showing my ignorance but am genuinely interested

Not as much as I thought then, about the same as have a dog castrated, why do people not do it then?

I think because for some it is still not financialy cost effective, I recently went to exeter sales, a couple of well bred dartmoor mares were there for sale, both in foal, one sold for about £60! There was a colt in the sale ring, bonnie little thing cobby, sprightly to make 13.1 he sold for £60 too! There is no way he would have sold for anywhere near £300 gelded, so people just do not bother because for them it is a waste of money.

Some vets will only geld at certain times of the year, ie, no mud, no flies, etc.

I had 3 little Welshies gelded a couple of years ago and between them the bill was over £900 (one of them got an infection). I have since sold one for £150 and the other 2 are now for sale at 4yo for just £700 for both! Doesn't even cover the vet bill, to say nothing of the feed, hay, feet trimming, worming, etc! :(
