How much to geld?

Just wondered if anyone here has gelded a youngster recently and wouldn't mind telling me how much they paid?

We sold our last yearling colt entire and the last time I was present for a gelding procedure was at work two and a half/three years ago, so I don't have any up-to-date figures to compare the current situation with (OH has just told me how much he paid to have his 2yo colt cut and it made my eyes water - about as much as OH's eyes watered at the thought of being gelded!)

Thanks Dexter...the cost was roughly the same as you the last time I was involved. I'm in rural mid Wales and the pair that came to do the three yearlings and the Shetland travelled up from Carmarthenshire (over an hour's drive), so I though the cost was fair enough considering the travelling as well.

OH lives in a very accessible (albeit rural-ish) area of Scotland and it cost MORE than the expensive vets amount that you quoted!

I have just turned the heads of everyone in my office for the noise I made reading that! I hadn't even thought of it like that...it's the mind it goes in to not the mouth it comes out of :p

OH has now rung the vet to query the bill, they were charging £313 (:eek:)for what appears to be a straight forward gelding. He was going to quite happily hand over the money until I told him it sounded like a bit of a rip off to me...we shall see how far he gets with them! I know you'll all say he should've established the cost beforehand etc, unfortunately forward planning is something my OH isn't particularly blessed with. It's why I tell him he 'needs' me in his life :p
 
I'm pretty sure poor Cassius was not in possession of an extra pair!

As far as I'm aware it was all pretty straight forward as well, there weren't any complications and he hasn't needed any follow up treatment or vet checks. He's not a difficult horse by any means, I'd tried to convince OH to leave his bonkers on (agathe horse, not OH) because he wasn't coltish in any way and they have experience of racing horses that have been left as stallions. If it was around the £200 mark I'd chalk it down to experience and tell him in future perhaps he should 'shop around' a bit, because he must have access to several vet practices being located where he is, but over £300 for a standard procedure?! I thought maybe I was out of touch with these things but you've all reassured me!
 
I have just called my vets and asked for a quote as I saw a nice colt foal at the weekend,
they quoted £167 +drugs and sedation usually around £220 for all +call out 56.54 +vat, so that looks like around £340!! eek
 
Not complicated, vet wanted him in as everywhere so muddy here he wasn't happy doing him standing at home. He had both dropped but he wanted to knock him out just incase as he was only young (7 months)

He stayed the night previous & night after, just to keep an eye on him :)
 
have called other vets in area, cheapest I have found is £146+visit+vat
so still in the region of £240, I am in north yorkshire
 
£220 for my now 5yr old done last year at 4. Standing sedation although add on another £50 or so for the antibiotics about a week later after he managed to get it infected!
 
OH has rung the vets, they have agreed to drop the bill to £180 :cool: bit of a difference right?! They'd added a list of drugs that OH was pretty sure they hadn't used, how cheeky is that?

I'm glad I made him query it instead of simply paying, perhaps he's learnt a valuable lesson today!
