Hi

As some of you know I have been looking for a pony but am on a bit of a budget. Well I've seen one I like but its at the top end of my budget and comes with nothing. So how much am I looking at for tack etc.

Can be second hand.

I know I sound like a numpty, thanks for all your help.

a decent 2nd hand synthetic saddle would be fine right? so that should be pretty cheap! then you will be able to get a decent pony bridle for under £20. Headcollar/leadrope etc and i guess it will need a t/o and a stable rug? look on ebay for some absolute bargains. No need to spend a lot, especially on a little pony thats not going to be out competing all the time etc. what pony is it you've found? any of the ones that were suggested on here?

Synthetic saddle would be fine.

Yep I like a couple of the ones I saw on here but didn't want to waste anyones time arranging a viewing if I then couldn't afford to kit it out.

I thought you had to get professionals out to fit saddles etc. Or can I just get the size from the last owner. Are they fitted to the rider and pony or just pony. What I mean is if myself and daughter wanted to ride him would we need two saddles. I am a 5ft 2inch woman by the way despite my user name.

Sorry for all the stupid questions but we all have to start somewhere!

Have you asked if there's any tack / kit they will let you have /sell cheaply with it? One of the 2 we bought didn't offer any tack in the advert, but we were given saddle, bridle and a rug included. M ight be worth asking, especially if they're paying livery costs they may wish to sell with tack to get it sold more quickly

Sounds like a good idea to ask if the seller will include some tack. If you budget say 500, I would spend the majority on having a good quality second hand general purpose saddle fitted to the pony, and then rather go for cheaper other bits and pieces (ebay?)

I think you would not need separate saddles unless one of you wanted a dressage saddle and the other a jumping one etc.

I would strongly recommend using a saddle fitter though rather than just getting the size from the old owner, since ponies (and even saddles) change shape over time.

Good luck!

Where in the country are you based Stanley? Perhaps there are some car boot sales around where you are, or other people on the Forum may know good places to view/post ads for second hand tack.

yes it is worth getting a saddler to check, but that doesnt mean you cant still get a cheap synthetic. Will you be riding the pony too then not just the child? I would suggest having a look at synthetic saddles in robinsons/rideaway etc. you would need to know the pony's width and the length of saddle to buy it, but then you could get a saddler or even just a more knowledgeable person to check its fit i guess. Would certainly recommend wherever you end up getting it from whether new or 2nd hand, do get someone to check its fit. What is this pony like then that you are keen on?

you should be able to pick up a wintec off ebay for about £200, just be careful what you are buying because cheap doesn't always mean its better, you can cause more problems than you solve with cheap tack. unfortunately horses aren't cheap, so it might be better to save up for something a little better. and get a saddler to check the fit. good luck and i hope it all goes well.

To be honest it is better to buy quality second hand tack than cheap new tack, it will look better, probably fit better & will definately last longer than the cheap stuff.

As to how much it will cost you....it depends on many things. Look on ebay & various other sites. Check adverts in tack shops for things for sale. Don't get carried away, buy what you need....no what you want....you can buy the less necessary items aftyer you have the essentials. Good Luck

I would ask the seller what size and width of saddle the pony is in now, that will give you a starting point. An inexpensive synthetic saddle will give you something to ride in for the time being, but i would definitely try to get a fitter or an experienced friend to look at it to make sure that it sits well.

Libbys webbing bridles are as cheap as chips, don't break (unlike cheap leather) and you can stick them in the washing machine to clean them!! Equestrian Clearance Warehouse and Tackdirect are two of the cheapest reliable websites I use.

You're saddle will be the most expensive part. The rest, inc rugs, can be skimped on and you could get everything you needed, inc rugs, for under a £100 off ebay easily.

The cheapest and best way to get a saddle that FITS is have a saddler come out and fit a branded synthetic (thorowgoods are far better than wintecs for flat ponies) which will cost you £30-£40. Take a note of the exact model and size of saddle the pony needs and buy it off the internet. You might be lucky and get it second hand (do be careful of the model though - there's been huge changes in the synthetics design in the last couple of years) but even a brand new syntheitc will cost you under £400
