I know it depends on each persons finacial situation, but if you had to sell on your horse at a loss how much would you be prepared to lose?

I bought a horse in Jul 06, I need to sell him as he is not right for me, previous owners have said they will buy him back for £1000 less than I paid for him.

On the one hand I wouldnt have to go through the expense and stress of selling him, but on the other hand I cant really afford to throw away £1000.

The previous owners only need to do a bit of fittening work and he will be out doing exactly the same job (eventing) as before. Its not as if he cant do his job, he has just had a bit of a holiday!

Any thoughts???

I have bought two horses - one for £2500 and one for £2200 and I knew when I bought them that I might 'lose' all the money. They are not an investment for me - they are an investment in my children.

i would look at it this way.. How much do you spend a month on livery charges etc...... ?? i bet you if you saved your horsey money you'll have £1000 in no time. You'll get a break from horse in which time you can look for me one and have some free time and you could offer to help rider other folks horsey whilst saving for new one without heart ache
just an idea if you made your mind up to sell and want quick sell without any hassle and timewasting folk around

He was supposes to be an investment Nuala!
I bought him to start riding again but have lost my confidence.

Im sure your children will have years of enjoyment from their horses, they are very lucky!!

Exactly! I was paying for him to be on selling livery, so the expense of holding on to him was adding up V quickly, hence why I let him go at that price (£1k). Was because he was diagnosed with possible degenerative back probs and wouldn't be jumping big courses like I wanted him to. Anyway he was sold on from that home at the price I actually paid for him and found a super home doing RC stuff - I am in touch with the new owner and he has a home for life. So although I lost a hell of a lot of money on him, I would actually have given him away to the home he has now

Well I think I would decide how much it will cost me to keep him and try to sell him myself and how much time it would take and whether I can cope and decide from that. But no I wouldn't want to lose £1k on the deal. Can you negotiate with them?

I really hope you find what you need - my children do love their horses - and they are very lucky!!

Cate I'm just starting looking for something similar. What would you let him go for?

I have pm'ed you.

I did talk to them and said it was too much for me to lose, but I would be prepared to meet them half way so i only lost £500 but they wouldnt budge!
I said i would advertise and sell him myself. The only thing is i'm really shy and embarrassed of riding infront of others!! There isn't really anyone at yard who could ride him for me and if i have to pay someone costs will add up!

I would take their offer tbh, having sold one of my own and two for a friend recently, it is so incredibly stressful, and decent advertising will cost around £400 plus if you add in keep etc for the whole time the horse is advertised it will probably cost you whole lot more than £1k.
The way I would look at it is that you have? had a lot of fun for not a lot of money!

If you are wanting a quick, hassle free sale then their offer would be the easiest. If you sell him privately you'll have the extra livery and advertising costs not to mention your time to take in to consideration. Work out what is the best option for you, but if you say no now and then find you can't sell him in a couple of months, will their offer still be there?

fingers crossed for you finding something else and not loosing too much. I hate to think how much I would lose on Bert, I was robbed and would probably get a few hundred pounds for him

Luckily for both of us I wouldn't part with him for all the tea in china!

I have spent a fortune and have a horse that i dont enjoy riding as i have lost confidence. £1000 is too much to lose when all I have really done is brush up my stable management after a 10 yr gap!! Mind you my shavings bed is immaculate!!

Sorry didnt know the history! If you have lost your confidence then get rid asap, I have seen so many people in your situation try to recoup their outlay, and all that happens is they keep a horse for much longer than necessary often paying people to rideit for them and hence losing a lot more in the process.
If you have lost your confidence then cut your losses NOW!
Ps If it stable management training you are after feel free to come and muck out for me
