How much would one expect to pay for someone to come in to a private yard and muck out two horses on woodchips (muck heap next to stables), fill 2 haynets and daily poo-pick 1 acre field? Hertfordshire area. (Mondays - Fridays inclusive)

Where abouts in Herts are you? I disagree with Rossiroo as there is no chance you'd get anyone to do that amount for £8/10. I would think that a minimum cost would be £10 per hour and travel or you would be looking at about £10 per horse.

That on our yard its £5 to muck out and haynet per horse and £5 a week per horse to poo pick! As well as turnout and bring in etc. If more regular work depending on how far you have to drive etc deals could be negotiated!

ok, for example, my groom is based on my yard so I pay £5 per stable which includes hay and water and making of feeds if I require. Both horses are very clean though. I then pay her £4 per day to poo pick my field, this is good for her in the winter as less poo but summer it evens out with more poo. She has no travelling costs and I also get more 'mates rates' If it was a yard down the road then everything would be a few more quid on top and maybe travel. I also pay her 1.50 a horse to turn out or bring in, although she takes them together, she changes rugs, picks out feet and grooms them and treats any minor cuts etc. This is so I can just go down and tack up and ride.

I agree FS but she is happy and we get mates rates as she is on my yard, also the horses are only about from 7am till about 5pm, in the summer they are out 24/7!! :)

Its more the weather! Maybe if she's a friend you could give her presents every so often even if its taking chipy to the yard for her tea or something? lol What ever arrangement you come to I hope it all works out for you both, its handy having extra help when needed :-) x

One yard I do gives me £8 and hour but than the others are £10 an hour, am at the £8 an hour yard every am as opposed to only a few days and it is fairly local, during the summer it is only an hour but winter it is normally 2 hours. This is in Herts/bucks.

Gosh I am cheap!!! I share out hay to field ponies, top up/check waters/fencing etc, skip/muck out 5 stables...do some poo-picking...2 hours Mon-Fri for £6...5 min travelling time only mind you!

I usually charge a min of £10 per hour and will do whatever for that time.

One yard i charge £20 per day to muck out 10 (all shavings and literally just muckout no haynets etc) but i also get lessons on top - this is in Herts

Jumping on the bandwagon here - sorry!
Bring in one, turn out another, muck out (straw bed, mucky mare). Rugs if necessary. Part of mucking out to me includes top up hay, and water, and sweep down. No additional travelling (on yard, anyway). Mon-Fri. I would have expected £5 per day?
My friend was given £12 for the five days. Don't think she'll do it anymore.

Owlie, are you planning to get someone who does this as their living to do this? A professional mobile horsecare person would charge about £10 an hour, sometimes putting mileage on top.
Obviously costs will be different if it's being done by someone who is already at the yard, or who is maybe doing it for extra money rather than for a living. They don't have to worry about holidays, or being sick, or just getting times when work is scarce.

im watching this thread with interest as i am thinking (wanting) someone to help me out, the price's so far are very interesting. does anyone know how much these rates change through the uk? as i was looking at feed/turnout and stable done (morning duties), depending on cost it might even be worth moving to part livery.

Last Winter I used to charge £10 a day to muck out one horse (deep straw bed) fill 3 haynets, change rugs, dice with death in turning her out/ bringing her in!! fill stable/ field water trugs, hay in the field, prepare and give feed, pick feet!! The owner even felt that cost was excessive! grrr

£10 an hour and travel on top to muck out?! Really? I don't earn huge amounts more than that as a salaried professional! That sounds insane to me. If it was something skilled like clipping or plaiting maybe. When I worked with horses it was just over minimum wage and I rode for that too and clipped and plaited. I was thinking about getting help this winter with mine but if that's how much it costs to fill a haynet and pick up poo no way!

I should change job! Don't know why I bothered going to uni sometimes. Not a dig at people working with horses btw, more a comment on how terribly underpaid scientists are!
