Hello so my friend is offering to take me to a show on the weekend, it is about 30 mins away, (20 miles). Baring in mind she’s not taking her horse so it is purely for my sake and she would be going out of her way. just wondering how much fuel is to tow a trailer 20 miles roughly? As I would add something on top of fuel cost since she’s doing me a huge favour.

ETA- horse is 17.1hh ISH as I’m sure it would make a difference

Fuel consumption varies hugely from vehicle to vehicle. 50p a mile would cover most vehicles though so I’d have that as a starting point.

Most pick up truck types I would imagine are 2.4-3L engines and therefore at the costs of fuel these days I'd be looking at more like a pound a mile, especially as she'll be using more to pull.

Also more likely it's petrol run which uses more fuel per mile anyway. It's only a short journey and the cost of renting a box or trailer would be far much more anyway.

Perhaps the 'add on top' could be an offer of a day off from the yard for her if you didn't want it to be too pricey.

The more you offer her the more likely she is also to say, 'That's okay X amount is fine with me' with X amount being a smaller number than £20.

My friend gave me £20 for a slightly shorter journey. It was far more than my fuel cost and gratefully received.

My pick up does 30mpg towing, so that would work out around the tenner mark.
however I would be inclined to offer at least £20 and perhaps a bottle of something.

If it was just the fuel e.g. drop off at the vets and leave then £25 would be good, but as she's also spending the day at the show with you I would offer £50. Still a lot cheaper than hiring and she can say 'no £30 is fine' or something if she doesn't want that much!

£1 a mile is more realistic. It’s not just fuel, there’s her insurance, wear & tear & presumably she’s doing the driving.

which is why that’s the starting point. £20 for the fuel for the 40 miles, then extra for time, effort etc. £40-50 and a thank you present seems about right. Still a fraction of hire costs.
