My 6 year old Irish cob gelding has had me off several times in the 8 months I have had him due to bucking following a jump, when being asked for canter and occasionally just when he felt like it.
Decided to sell, found lovely buyer, but horse failed vetting as lame on small circles (excellent on everything else).
Consulted my vet and turns out he has soft tissue damage to front right hoof. Now on 6 weeks box rest to see what happens.
He is such a good horse in every other way. Really don't want to sell, but can not afford to get injured again.
Someone suggested instead of selling, turning him away for 6 months to a year, then having him reschooled and having lessons. They said he may forget about the bucking.
What do others think? And rough ideas as to how much it would cost to have him reschooled? Many thanks.

I think you need to get to the bottom of his lameness issues first as this may be connected to the bucking.

Schooling costs depends on where you are in the country but likely to be in the region of £120 - £200 per week (including livery). Depending on horse, then it could take up to 8 weeks before he's ready to come back to you.

Good luck!

Costs vary quite a lot depending where you send him. Only send him to sowewhere that you have been recommended as there are many that offer this service but will take your money, fail to do the job properly & even knacker your horse. It's posibly the right way to go, but be careful on who you chose to trust with your horse..... Good Luck

My horse went to a pro event yard for schooling livery for 10 days 2 years ago. Price has probably gone up a little now, but I paid £20 a day. Not bad at all!

Why turn him away for so long? You'll lose all the good bits he's learnt and have to build up muscle again - he'll get used to being a field and therefore less likely to want to work..... unless he has to be off for vet reasons. In my experience, I wouldn't expect him to "forget" about bucking - whatever reasons were there for him to do it in the 1st place will still be there.

I would charge £150/wk all in with good facilities and 35 yrs experience. (I'm in Glos)

Previous owner of one of my horse's had said horse on a schooling livery for a few months and horse was pretty much fine while it was there, well behaved etc then when it got back home it was back to it's normal naughty tricks

IMO, try and get a yard where they involve you riding the horse as well.

I varies- shadow had 2 weeks of dressage schooling at £180 per week and also had two weeks of SJ schooling at a different yard that charges £85 per week.

I guess for me the cost would not be the issue - more that i would be concerned with the reputation and the 'calmness' of the person working on the horse

Just be careful where you send him. Irish cobs are a very specific type and you should really try to find a yard that works mostly with that breed or the heavier natives. I have seen a few nice heavy types spoiled by "trainers" expecting them to move and behave like warmbloods. They are usually much smarter than continental dumbloods and need a more varied approach. Good luck and I hope his foot is better soon, it could be part of the problem.
