How much turnout do your horses get in winter?

Out every day unless absolutely horrendous weather or fields flooded.

Old yard they went out whatever the weather for as long as they wanted to be out

mine are in at nite out all day!
tends to be mon-fri 7am-6/7pm and sat and sun 9-4/5
less on weekends just because thats the time wen we hack or mess about with them in the yard as we're not at school or work.

it was a joke as no sooner did i get home, it was time to go back to the yard again, not fun and never again.

They can come in for shelter if they want but are never stabled (unless ill)

We can choose exact times but I favour as long as possible so turn out at 7am ish and bring in about 4pm. If it is torrential rain for a prolonged time then I may not turn out as the fields are very open, but it's my choice.

Very little - I have a hardcore pen I can put them in during the day (as long as I salt it during freezes) and if its been dry for a few days they can be turned out in the walkway between fields for a buck and a roll but thats it. Mine like it like that though - they like being snuggly in their stables

Ours go out everyday unless it is really heavy snow or the fields are absolutley saturated - they had to stay in for a total of 4 days last winter and that was in different weeks. They go out at 7ish and come in when they want - anytime from 3.30 through till 6 (i am lucky i have loads of friends at the yard, who will grab my old girl in if she is gate hanging). The old lady put herself on "box rest" for the worst week of winter - she would go out for about an hour and then come back to the gate. I used to fetch her in, but then againg she has a huge stable so it was fine for her to be in.

Around 8-10 hours at a push. My mare is waiting at the gate by then. My filly hasn't lived on this yard for a winter yet.

I am asking as someone wanting my horse is at a yard where they get 4 hours a day, but they get worked every day and have absoloutely huge stables, he would be ok with this i think as he is an exracer what are your opinions?

My HW cob goes out at 8ish and is waiting to comein from 1-4 bless him he doesn't like it when it starts getting cold later on

I think it depends on the horse. mine has always been out in the day and in at night, but last year he had to saty in all winter - he got turned out about 3 times in about 4 months. i thought he woudl turn into a nightmare but he was actually really happy - there was loads going on in the yard and he had access to talk to other horses. he had hay to munch on all day and was worked every day. I will not be turning out so much this winter I don't think, as he was actually happier being in.

My mare however, will go out in the day unless the weather is really horrible, as she likes to be out.

The yard he will be at is huge it has about 100 horse and theres regular comps so he would have lots of entertainment

One is out 24/7 the others go out from 8am -7pm .....we can leave out if we want, but i tend to bring mine in for a few hours to give the paddocks a break, I would NEVER keep my horse at a yard that didn't allow turnout....horses are designed to live outside not be stuck in a box.

Out all day, in all night. Only have no turnout if very bad weather. I wouldnt choose a yard with no winter turnout as I think it is important for horses to get some turnout everyday.

ditto

not native types either (well one is welsh x TB), sports horses, anglo arabs and thoroughbreds

theyve got shelter if they want it, plenty of natural shelter, theyd rather be out

None at all and they are absolutely fine with that. In Summer they go out once a day for about 5 hours although if the fields are wet they don't go out - they've had no turnout for 2 weeks and are no different!

Do you not have enough land to accomodate them then?

We have unlimited summer turnout and in the winter we can turn out 4 days a week. On the non turnout days I put my mare in the sand school for an hour for a leg stretch. If I had it my way she would be out everyday in the winter.

Mine are out 15 hours in winter as they are out at night and in during the day as this routine suits me and them.
Their turnout is cut down in the spring/summer so they don't get too fat.

Our horses get turned out all the time - whenever, but ... in the winter they can be up to their armpits in mud & the fields get trashed, I am thinking abut keeping them in this winter to try and keep the fields in better condition but I doubt if I will be able to do it.
