I have a JRT who is about 9 years old. Recently we have been doing more and more walking each day and now she is doing about 4 miles every day. The rest of the day she spends pottering about with me or asleep in her basket.

She is very lean and fit, eats well and seems to be coping with the exercise but is this amount of walking likely to make her more prone to arthritis and other problems as she gets older?

Four miles (what, one hour?) wouldn't be excessive but I don't know if I would up it, at her age.

My old girl (larger breed) was still out doing three hour rambles at nine years old but I wouldn't recommend that for every dog.

Sounds like she is fit enough to take it and will probably be doing her joints better than no exercise at all.

My nine year old schnauzer gets an hour long walk everyday and at the weekend she either gets one long one of 90mins-2hours or two shorter ones, eg one hour and 45mins.

She loves them and still wants to play and run about when she comes home.
