How much does you horse drink a night and how much on average should they be drinking?

I have had my horses in at night around 7pm to 7am for just over a week now and for the past couple of days he has been drinking all his water (TubTrug bucket, medium size i think, could be large) which he doesn't usually do.

He is 2 1/2yrs and currently 13.3hh.

a lot - a large muck skip used as a water bucket and I went out and bought another large and heavy duty bucket (about and 1/2 x the size of a normal one) as the skip wasnt enough - when I finished off in the evening he would hardly have any water left. Had to purchae this very heavy duty bucket (blooming expensive at £18) as he is prone to playing with mere ordinary ones and destroying them..doesnt even have a corner block for his haylage anymore as he was picking that up with his teeth and throwing it across the box. Mine is 16.2 m/w if that helps.

Hi

Water intake is affected by so many things so it is hard to say for your horse. If he is getting dry hay and in for a lot of hours (you haven't said how long), then it is perfectly plausible for him to drink a medium size tub trug of water. You have indicated however that this is unusual for him, my first port of call would be the water in the field to check that it is ok. Not sure if you have had all this rain where you are, but if you have and he is still getting grass I would expect his water intake to be down from usual. He has only been in for a week so don't panic yet, just keep any eye on it.

Funnily enough mine's been drinking about that much too. We have 2 buckets in her stable overnight and sometimes she drinks all of one sometimes half of each. I thought it was quite a lot for her. Though I've heard it's warmer now than it was this time last year, maybe it's having an effect (just guessing really!)

I have 5 horses in at night this year, all of them between 15.3hh and 17hh, mostly not ridden during the week but out in the fields all day.

Every morning they have nearly all drank the same amount of water, sometimes hardly anything (all of them) then other nights they all drink nearly all of it (large trug) I often wonder why this is ...?

My friend got so fed up with lugging 4 buckets to each of her 6 horses she invested in a extra long hosepipe that will reach to all the stables so now she goes around at night fills up 2 large rubber buckets trug style ones (cant carry while full) and while they are filling up she gives the neds some TLC..

My old pony used to drink hardly anything... and i used to worry like mad but i think that was just him.... don't know about new ponio as havent picked her up yet!!

My horse seems to drink alot when he gets anxious or his routine is changed. When he stays away for a competition or when we bring him in a tnight for the first time he can drink 3 buckets a night!

My girl drinks about 3/4 of a large water trug, our little pony hardly touches her water at all, she has a medium trug. I too use a long hose pipe, no more sloshing water in my boots!
